【英訳】侏儒の言葉4：修身

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Moral Training

Morality is another name for convenience. It is something similar to the rule of ‘KEEP LEFT’.

The benefit that we have derived from morality is that we can save some time and effort. The damage that we face because of morality is the fact that we have had our conscience completely paralysed.

Those against morality recklessly are those who lack the concept of economy. Those who obey morality without thinking twice are either timid or lazy.

The morality that rules us is that from the era of feudalism, which has nevertheless been distorted by capitalism. We do derive almost nothing at all from it, but some disadvantage.

　道徳は便宜の異名である。「左側通行」と似たものである。
