　…… You are asking me ‘What in your body thinks if it’s not the brain?’ ……

　It is not such a big problem. It is neither mysterious nor wild. Instead, it is quite a boring and commonplace problem.
　…… Why don’t you brush the dirt off your trousers?

　You listen carefully after you straighten your tie.
　Our mind …… or our life consciousness if you want to call it so, it is nowhere to be seen. It fills our whole body. It is just the same as lower life forms without the brain. If you pinch your butt, your butt hurts. If you get hungry, your stomach feels empty.
　It is way too simple.
　However, it might be much too simple for you to understand, so I’ll tell you about it in plain language: all sorts of desires, emotions, wills, memories, judgements, beliefs etc. and everything, of which we are conscious all the time, absolutely equally fill each of the thirty trillion cells in our whole body exactly the same way. And the brain is nothing but a group of cells that are in charge of intermediation between other cells, and that communicate, without fail, what each of the body cells is aware of to each of the body cells.

……「脳髄で考えなくてどこで考える」というのか……。
……「脳髄で感じなくてどこで感ずるのだ」というのか……。
……「われわれの精神意識はどこにある」……「われわれはドウして生きている」というのか……。

　チットモおかしい問題ではないではないか。不思議でもなければ、奇抜でもない。極めて平々凡々の問題ではないか。

　われわれの精神……もしくは生命意識はドコにもない。われわれの全身の到るところにみちみちているのだ。脳髄をもたない下等動物とオンナジことなんだ。お尻を抓ればお尻が痛いのだ。お腹が空くとお腹が空くのだ。
　すこぶる簡単明瞭なんだ。
　しかしこれだけでは、あんまり簡単明瞭過ぎて、わかり難いかも知れないから、今すこし砕いて説明すると、われわれが常住不断に意識しているところのアラユル欲望、感情、意志、記憶、判断、信念なぞというものの一切合財は、われわれの全身三十兆の細胞の一粒一粒ごとに、絶対の平等さで、おんなじように籠もっているのだ。そうして脳髄は、その全身の細胞の一粒一粒の意識の内容を、全身の細胞の一粒一粒ごとに洩れなく反射交感する仲介の機能だけを受持っている細胞の一団に過ぎないのだ。
