原作小説を漫画化する人たちは頭をフル回転させている
前にこの記事で、小学館の無料の漫画公開サービスについて触れた。小学館以外にも、気軽にタブレット端末で漫画を読めるサービスは多い。
一方、アマゾンのKindle Unlimited会員は月間９８０円だが、最近は、岩波書店の本さえも多く含まれていて、非常にお得だと思う。そのサービスには、月刊の漫画雑誌もいくつか含まれている。
その中の一つに、小説の原作を元に漫画を描いている二人の対談が載っていた。興味深かったので紹介したいと思う。
なお、対談の中に、漫画業界特有の用語として、「ネーム」、「コマ割り」という言葉が使われている。それについては、このサイトに説明がある。
聞き手：小説の文章からネームを起こされる際にはどのような工夫をされていらっしゃいますでしょうか?
剣：僕の場合はまず、原作小説をスマホなりなんなりで開いて文章を読んで、紙に落とし込むのですが、この場面でこの内容なら、これくらいのコマを割るだろう、と考えながら描いています。頭のなかで映像化して、書き留めるようなイメージですね。
あや：基本的には初見で読んだときに「こうなってるんだ」とか、頭に思い浮かんだ情景や構図は頭のなかに残しておいて、実際にネームを切るときに「うまく収まればいいな」と思いながら起こしていきます。うまくハマった場合はガッツポーズです。そういうシーンは満を持して見開きページになります。（中略）小説のいいところはできるだけ落とし込みたいですね。
漫画家たちは、原作の読者の期待に応えるため、「頭をフル回転させながら漫画を描いている」。
剣：自分で作る場合には「ここは出さなくてもなんとかなる」とか計算が働いたりするのですが、原作小説がある場合は「読者の人はこう思っているだろう」とか「ここ気が付いているだろうから描いたほうが喜んでもらえるんじゃないか」とか考えてしまう。
あや：はい、ありますよね。原作があるからこそ、読者さんの心情を先回りしてネームに落とし込もうとしてみたり。
剣：そこを汲み取ってもらえたりするとすごく嬉しいです。そういったところが原作小説のある漫画の喜びであり、楽しみであり、苦しみでもあると。
一方、デジタル化によって漫画家の創作活動が楽になっている。文中の「トーン」とは、スクリーントーンのことを指す。
あや：私はデジタルを導入したことで表現の幅は広がりました。（中略）
剣：雲のトーンをあえて水のところに貼ってみたり。昔はよくやりました。デジタルだと直接「こういうエフェクトを入れちゃえ!」とできるので、工夫なんかはしなくてもよくなって、寂しいといえば寂しいのですが、やはりデジタルになって楽になったという方が大きいと思います。なにより、トーン代がかかりませんから! 昔はトーン代だけで月に2~3万は飛んでいましたからね。
あや：ひとりのキャラに2パターンの基本トーンとかも無理ですね。多分もっと省エネな感じになっているかと思います。あとなによりカラー!
カラーはアナログだと少し苦手なので、カラーに関しては本当にデジタルにしてよかっと思っています。
剣：僕も今はもうアナログでカラーは塗りたくないですね。
最近、全編フルカラーの漫画が増えているが、デジタル化の恩恵なのだろう。
最後に、原作小説と、それを巧みに漫画にした一例を挙げよう。
尾てい骨のあたりがムズムズしたかと思うと、何か細長いものが体の中から外へと生えてきた。それは、魔力や生命エネルギーの源――霊素でできているらしく、不定形のものだったが……体外の空気に触れると実体をなした。 細長い“それ”は、ふらふらと空中で揺れ、私の視界に入ってきた。いや、勝手に揺れたわけではない。私は自分の意思で、“それ”を動かすことができた。
尻尾。 猫のような、黒い尻尾である。
原作は文字による、客観的な描写だが、漫画家は、キャラクターの図像と背景を創造する。漫画家の画力は高く、心理描写に成功している。この人もたぶん、原作を読み込み、想像力を精いっぱい働かせて、良い漫画を描きたいと思ったのだろう。
このような創作活動は、AIには無理だと思う。少なくとも今のところは。

People who turn original novels into manga are thinking as hard as they can
Earlier in this article, I mentioned Shogakukan's free manga publishing service. In addition to Shogakukan, there are many other services that allow you to easily read manga on tablet devices.
On the other hand, Amazon's Kindle Unlimited membership is 980 yen per month, but recently, even many books from Iwanami Shoten are included, so I think it's a great deal. The service also includes several monthly comic magazines.
One of them contained a conversation between two people who are drawing manga based on the original of the novel. It was interesting, so I would like to introduce it. In the interview, the words "name" and "panel division" are used as terms peculiar to the manga industry. This and that sites explain it.
Interviewer: What kind of ingenuity do you use when creating names from sentences in novels?
Tsurugi: In my case, I open the original novel on my smartphone or whatever, read the text, and put it down on paper.
If I were to draw this scene, I would divide the panels like this when I drew it. It's an image that you visualize in your head and write down.
Aya: Basically, when I read it for the first time, I keep in my head the scenery and composition that came to my mind, such as "This is how it's going to be".
When I actually cut the name, I raise it while thinking "I hope it fits well". If things go my way, I do a fist pump. Such a scene will be a double-page spread with full satisfaction. (Omitted) I want to incorporate as much of the good points in the novel as possible.
In order to meet the expectations of the readers of the original work, the manga artists "overwork their brains to draw manga."
Tsurugi: When you make your own, you can calculate things like "I can get by without using this part". If there is an original novel, I think, "Readers will think this way,'' or "Readers will be happy if I write it because they will notice this.''
Aya: Yes, there are. Precisely because we have the original work, we try to anticipate the feelings of the readers and incorporate them into the name.
Tsurugi: I would be very happy if the readers understood that. That kind of thing is the joy, pleasure, and pain of a manga with an original novel.
On the other hand, digitization has made the creative activities of manga artists easier. "Tone" in the text refers to screen tone.
Aya: Introducing digital tools has broadened my range of expression. (Omitted)
Tsurugi: In the past, I often used cloud tones to depict water. With digital tools, you can directly add effects, so you don't have to do anything to devise it. After all, I think that it is more important to say that it has become easier with digital. Above all, there is no tone fee! In the past, the tone fee alone cost 20,000 to 30,000 yen a month.
Aya: It's impossible to have two basic tones for one character. I think it's probably more energy efficient. And above all, color! I'm not very good at analog color, so I'm really glad that I'm using digital tools for color.
Tsurugi: I also don't want to use analog colors anymore.
Recently, the number of full-length full-color manga is increasing, which is probably due to the benefits of digitization.
Finally, let me give you an example of the original novel and how it was cleverly made into a manga.
Just when I thought my tailbone was itching, something long and thin grew out of my body. It is the source of magical power and life energy. It seemed to be made of spiritual elements, and was amorphous, but when it touched the air outside the body, it became a substance.
The elongated "it" swayed in the air and came into my field of vision. No, it didn't sway on its own. I was able to move "it" with my own will. it's a tail. It is a black tail like a cat has.
The original is a written, objective depiction, but the manga artist creates the iconography and background of the characters. The artist's drawing ability is high, and he succeeds in psychological depiction. This person probably read the original work thoroughly and thought that he wanted to draw a good manga by using his imagination to the fullest.
I think that such creative activities are impossible for AI. At least for now.
