【～連載～静岡の歴史を学ぼう269】 A castle named ’Kawanobe Castle’, which could not be built. 幻の川辺城（かわのべじょう）

静岡まつりが始まります！駿府城公園にも行かれる方もいらっしゃるかと思います。実は徳川家康公、将軍を引退後の大御所時代、現在とは別の場所に駿府城を築城しようという計画を立てたことがありました。

A castle named ’Kawanobe Castle’, which could not be built.

幻の川辺城（かわのべじょう）

Tokugawa Ieyasu released a spectacular plan for a new Sumpu Castle in October 1606 after his retirement as the shogun.

徳川家康は将軍を引退した後1606年10月に新しい駿府城を建てる壮大な計画を発表しました。

He planned to construct Sumpu Castle in Kawanobe Village along the Abe River.

駿府城を安倍川沿いの川辺村に建てる計画をしました。

It is the present-day Kawanobe-cho along Route 1 between JR Shizuoka station and the Abe River.

現在の川辺町で国道1号線沿い、JR静岡駅と安倍川の間にあります。

The main reason was to take advantage of the water transportation route.

1番の理由は水運を活用できることでした。

At that time, the world was experiencing the Age of Discovery.

当時、世界は大航海時代にありました。

Western missionaries and traders came to Japan for new opportunities.

西洋の宣教師や貿易商人たちが新たな機会を求めて日本にやってきました。

Their ships, called ‘Galleon’, impressed Tokugawa Ieyasu, who found them superior to Japanese traditional ships.

彼らの船はガレオン船と呼ばれ、徳川家康は日本の従来の船より優れていると理解し、その船に夢中になりました。

Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was well acquainted with international affairs, dreamed of the Galleons docking in a canal constructed right next to his new Sumpu Castle.

徳川家康は国際情勢に大変精通し、新しい駿府城のすぐわきに作った運河にそのガレオン船を停泊させることを夢見ていました。

But, this plan had a significant drawback - the Abe River.

しかしこの計画には重大な欠点がありました。安倍川です。

It was nicknamed ‘a river of rampage’ and flooded so often.

「暴れ川」と呼ばれ、度々洪水をおこしました。

In the past, the Abe River and the Warashina River flowed parallel to each other.

かつて安倍川と藁科川はそれぞれ平行して流れていました。

But Tokugawa Ieyasu connected the two rivers to make the present Abe River.

しかし徳川家康は二つの川をつなげて、現在の安倍川にしました。

However, even though Tokugawa Ieyasu had an effective large-scale riparian construction, the river’s current was still too rapid that it didn't serve as a perfect location for the castle.

とはいえ、いかに徳川家康が効果的で大規模な治水工事をしようとも、川の流れが急すぎて、城を作る場所には向きませんでした。

Even today, the river source is located on the 1600-meter altitude and the current rushes 60 kilometers down to the river's opening.

今でも源流は海抜1600メートルにあり、川は河口に向け60キロを流れ落ちていきます。

In the end, Tokugawa Ieyasu decided to build Sumpu Castle in its current location in November 1606.

ついに徳川家康は1606年11月にその時建っている場所に駿府城を造ることに決めました。

The original plan was cancelled and Sumpu Castle was expanded to the north and south instead.

元の計画は取りやめになり、その代わり駿府城は北と南に拡張されました。
