こんにちは！3月も最終日ですね。新年度が楽しみです。

こちらの英語学習日記シリーズでは、Blinkistで新しく知った英語表現や英単語を中心に、個人的に面白かった、勉強になったポイントを紹介していきます。今日はその第15回です！3週間目に突入しました。

強烈な副題ですね。今日のBlinkでは、Googling is believing(ググることは信じることだ)と述べられています。

今日のBlinkから得た学び

今日のBlinkの内容で、個人的にためになったものを引用します。

Online, we seek out information that reinforces our existing biases, which divides our society. A 2014 Pew Research Center study found that we tend to seek out online content that backs up our existing opinions, from blogs and tweets to articles and videos.

Conservatives reinforce their stances on certain issues by watching Fox News, while liberals do the same by reading the Huffington Post. The internet may be full of contrasting opinions, but as individual users, we tend to spend time in one corner of the web where we can interact with people who share our beliefs.

人はインターネットを通じて、自分の意見に近いコンテンツを見ようとする傾向がある。保守はFox News(日本なら産経新聞、読売新聞？)を、リベラルはHuff Post(日本なら毎日新聞、朝日新聞？)を読む。

ネット社会は、「自分にとって都合のいいことを信じる」ことが簡単にできてしまう構造になっている。その気になれば、自分と同じ意見の人しかいない、他の意見が完全に排除されたコミュニティ(echo chamber)で、いい気持ちになれてしまう。このことがさらなる分断を助長する。

新しく学んだ表現とその使い方

after[trying to find or catch sb/sth]

We don't seek out the advice of experts on controversial topics, since all we're after is validation of our own views. As a result, our society becomes polarized on topical issues.

afterにこんな意味があるんですね。

the fabric(of sth)[the basic structure of a society, an organization, etc. that enables it to function successfully]

The internet is in the process of radically transforming the very fabric of our knowledge and thoughts.

本来は「布」「反物」といった意味のfabricですが、前にtheがつくことで「土台」「基礎」といった意味にもなるようです。

sentient[able to see or feel things through the senses]

多分、「心を持ったロボット」という意味で使われてるはず。

lingerie[(used especially by shops/stores) women's underwear]

この綴りでランジェリーって読むのは想像できませんでした。

at a price[involving sth unpleasant]

but, it comes at a price.

「高くつく」という意味もありますが、今回は「悪い面もある」みたいな感じかな。

今日調べた単語

今日英英辞典で調べた単語・表現は次の46個です！今日の文章は短めでした。note投稿を始めてから、調べた表現が50より少なかった日は初めてかも。

蛍光ペンで線が引かれている単語・表現は、以前にも英英辞典で調べたことがあるもの、つまり今日のBlinkをきっかけに再会・復習することができた表現です。
今日を含め、ここ1週間で2、3回くらいcontemporaryを調べたので、どちらの意味も完璧に覚えることができました！
