Episode11: China Town

It is food that bothers me when I visit Anglo-Saxon countries. “ Yes, London. You know, fish, chips, cup ‘o tea, bad food, worse weather, Mary f***ing  Poppins, London!”, said Avi, who was a Jewish jeweller in New York, in the film of “Snatch”.

But, as for food, I think New York isn’t so different from London. When I ordered a double cheese burger at McDonald’s, they surprised me by serving two cheese burgers. Besides people had a bucket of French fries or a litre of Coke! Quantity sounds more important than quality here. Of course, there are bagels, pizzas and kebabs in New York. But almost all of them were brought by migrants and later have become established as New York’s typical foods.

However, Chinese food is special.  It keeps its own culture everywhere, every time. When the food doesn’t work for me, I often go to China town.

The fourth day morning, we had breakfast at a Chinese restaurant. All of the dishes were very tasty and we enjoyed our breakfast except for one; chicken’s feet! Needless to say, it was very delicious, but it was too grotesque. I could clearly see even their claws. I really respect the Chinese, because they cook all part of all creatures; ape’s brain, duck’s tongue, snake, and even scorpions.

Even if Armageddon came to the Earth, Chinese people could survive. Who ever leads food culture can rule the world. In fact, one in every five people in the world is Chinese!
