英文は、だれが→どうする→何をといった順番で並んでいます。
意味のかたまりで区切って、日本語を当ててから、解説にとんでみてください。

それでは、説明していきたいと思います。

My hand has been forced, however, / by the recent letters / in which Colonel James Moriarty defends / the memory of his brother, / and I have no choice / but to lay the facts / before the public / exactly as they occurred.
私の手は強いられた、しかしながら / 最近の投書によって / その中でジェームズ・モリアーティ大佐は擁護する / 彼の兄の記憶を / そして私は選択肢がない / 事実を置くことをのぞいて / 一般大衆の前で / それら(＝事実)が起こったまさにその通りに

in whichは #1にも出て来ているので、ご参考にしてみてください！

butは「～を除いて」という意味の前置詞で、後ろにはto lay…という名詞句(「…すること」)が続いています。
