スミレの山　高尾山⑲　アケボノスミレ Takao, the mountain of violets: No.19 Akebono-sumire

高尾山は、知る人ぞ知るスミレの山。
日本では、約５０種のスミレの野生種(*1)が確認されていますが、高尾にはそのうち１８種が自生している(*2)と言われています。高尾山ならびにその周辺では、毎年３月上旬から５月下旬にかけて、あちこちで可憐なスミレの花々を観察することができます。

Mt. Takao is known as habitats for a wide variety of wild violet flowers (in Japanese, sumire, or “Sue-Mee-Ray”). In Japan, about 50 species of wild violets (*1) have been confirmed, and 18 of them are said to grow naturally in the Mt. Takao area(*2). Every year from the beginning of March to the end of May, you can find pretty violet flowers all over the place in Mt. Takao and its surroundings.

４月の中旬頃、高尾山山頂から陣馬山へと続く尾根を歩いていると、路傍にポツンと赤紫色のスミレの花が咲いていることがあります。アケボノスミレです。

Around the middle of April, when trekking through the main ridge line leading from Mt. Takao to Mt. Jimba, you may spot a reddish-purple violet blooming in isolation by the trail. It is Akebono-sumire (Viola rossii).

開花時には葉が開いていない。距が太く短いのが特徴。
The leaves are not open when flowering. The flower has a spur that is thick and short.

アケボノスミレの花は比較的大きめなのですが、開花時に葉がまだ開いていないことが多く、全体的な色味が地面の色と紛れて目立ちません。なので、かなり注意して地面を見ていないと気がつかないことと、そもそも個体数が少ないのでその存在はあまり知られていません。ですが人の目を避けているわけではないらしく、みんなが普通に歩いている山道のすぐ脇で見つかります。

The flowers of Akebono-sumire are relatively large. The leaves are, however, often not yet fully open at the time of flowering. The overall color blends with the color of the ground, and is inconspicuous. You may not simply notice them unless you are careful about what you see on the ground. It seems, however, Akebono-sumire are not being shy; they can be found right beside the trail where many hikers are regularly passing by.
