スミレの山　高尾山⑫　スミレ Takao, the mountain of violets: No.12 Sumire

高尾山は、知る人ぞ知るスミレの山。
日本では、約５０種のスミレの野生種(*1)が確認されていますが、高尾にはそのうち１８種が自生している(*2)と言われています。高尾山ならびにその周辺では、毎年３月上旬から５月下旬にかけて、あちこちで可憐なスミレの花々を観察することができます。

Mt. Takao is known as habitats for a wide variety of wild violet flowers (in Japanese, sumire, or “Sue-Mee-Ray”). In Japan, about 50 species of wild violets (*1) have been confirmed, and 18 of them are said to grow naturally in the Mt. Takao area(*2). Every year from the beginning of March to the end of May, you can find pretty violet flowers all over the place in Mt. Takao and its surroundings.

こちらは、スミレという名のスミレ（Viola mandshuria）。名前が示す通り、古来より日本人が愛で歌に詠んできたスミレとは、この種のことなのでしょう。

This species has a genuine “Sumire” name (Viola mandshurica). As its name suggests, this must be the one that has been beloved and sung in poets by the Japanese for long over ancient times.

私は、高尾のスミレに魅せられてその生態に強い興味を持つに至ったいち一般人にすぎませんが、この種が山の中ではほとんど見られることはなく、人の営みが近い里山に多く咲いていることに、真正スミレの名を授かった理由があるように感じられてなりません。

I am just an ordinary person who is fascinated by violets in Takao. Not that I do not have any proof or evidence, but the fact this species is rarely found deep in mountains but commonly seen near human habilitation seems to indicate me why it was given a genuine Sumire name.

里山のみならず、街中、アスファルトの割れ目にも芽吹く、とっても逞しい種です。

They are a very strong species that grow not only in satoyama, but also in towns. I have even found them growing in the cracks in the streets paved in asphalt.
