20071105 NY番外編

今回の旅、まったく一人で行動できる日が二日間ほどありました。ここだけはどうしても「その時」に行かないと・・と思っていたのです。
観光ガイドには（多分）出てこない場所・・・そうです！（いやですね、この相づちの入れ方・・）ドナルド・フェイゲンが所有するスタジオです！！このブログでは何度も書いていますが、ニューヨーカーである彼の音楽に高校生の頃から助けられてきました。そんな訳でどうしても、この目で確かめたかった。旅の前半はTシャツで歩いた日もありましたが、この日は肌寒く長袖二枚にハーフコート。事前にHPで調べたので住所はすぐに解りました。地下鉄を降りて、大通りから一歩入った住宅街をテクテク、どの家もハロウィンが近いということで、きちんと手入れされた前庭と階段にカボチャやミイラ男、蜘蛛の巣などの飾り付けをしていました。日本のうわついたハロウィンとは違い、気合いを感じました。ほどなくして、そのスタジオと思われる場所に辿り着いた訳ですが・・・彼らしく、入り口にはポツリと住所が記されているだけでした。コンクリートブロックにグレーの塗装が施してある古くも新しくもないフラットな印象の建物。ひっそりと、こんな所であのサウンドが紡ぎ出されているのかと思うと、感慨深いものが。HPでは一般のレコーディングにも開放されているという事でしたが、外観からそれを感じとる事は出来ませんでした。もしかして、ここではないかも知れない・・・（以前、存在しないHPアドレスに騙された事もあった）。しばし眺めた後、不審者に思われても困るので、ちょっとだけ写真を撮ってまた歩き始めたのでした。

この思い出、観光地に行ったという訳ではないし、スタジオの中を覗いた訳でもないけど、有意義な出来事でしたね。今でもドナルド・ファイゲンやスティーリー・ダンの音楽は音楽の価値の基軸として存在し続けています。とにかく、計画されているんですよね。自分の中では、勝手に「デザイン・フュージョン」と呼んでいます。イラストでも、とにかく計画が見たい。それが感じられなければ、あまり面白いとは言えません。

それにしても都会にいると、とにかく歩来ます。この場所も想像以上に歩いて、ようやく辿り着いたという記憶があります。鹿児島は車社会でドアトゥドアでないと成り立たない世界、足も随分と老化したかも？

This trip, I had two days when I could act completely alone. This was the only place I really wanted to visit "then".
This is the one place that you won't (probably) find in the tourist guides. The studio owned by Donald Fagen! As I have written many times in this blog, his music has been helping me since I was a high school student, being a New Yorker. That's why I really wanted to see it with my own eyes. In the first half of my trip, I walked around in T-shirts on some days, but this day was chilly and I wore two long sleeves and a half coat. I checked the website beforehand, so I knew the address right away. After getting off the subway, I walked down a residential street that was one step away from the main street. All the houses were decorated with pumpkins, mummy men, spider webs, and other decorations in their neatly manicured front yards and stairways, as Halloween was coming soon. Unlike the hazy Halloween in Japan, I felt the spirit. Not long after, we arrived at the place where the studio was supposed to be............................................... It was a flat concrete block building with a gray paint job, neither old nor new. According to the website, it was open to the public for recording, but I couldn't sense that from the exterior. Maybe it wasn't here... (I had been fooled by a non-existent website address before). After looking around for a while, I didn't want to look suspicious, so I took a few pictures and started walking again.

20210119 Postscript

This memory is not of going to a tourist attraction, nor did I peek inside the studio, but it was a meaningful event. Even now, the music of Donald Feigen and Steely Dan continues to be a bastion of musical values. Anyway, it's been planned. In my mind, I call it "design fusion. Even in illustrations, I want to see the plan. If I can't feel it, it's not very interesting.

Still, being in the city, I walk a lot. I remember that I had to walk more than I imagined to finally reach this place. Kagoshima is a car-oriented city, where you have to go door to door.
