Meeting with the Shogun and toxic working culture(学習用)

Hey guys. Sorry for the late entry(*1). I have(*2) been enjoying some Obon vacation and haven't posted... Let's continue from where we left off(*3).

*1 sorry for late ~: ～が遅れてごめんなさい。
*2 have：現在完了形と過去完了形の違いは、"視点が現在にあるのか過去にあるのか"です。現在から、過去のことを振り返って話している場合は現在完了形、過去のある地点からさらに昔のことを振り返って話している場合は過去完了形になります。
e.g.　I have finished my homework.
 　　I had finished my homework when my mom came back. (母が帰ってきた地点の視点から話をしている)

みんな、こんにちは。更新が遅くなってごめんなさい。お盆休みを楽しんでいて、しばらく投稿していなかったんです、前回の続きから始めましょう。

After a week of grueling(*1) training, and feeling completely exhausted, it was time to "graduate" from our training. That day we were all herded into(*2) a special room where we would hear a speech from the company president(*3).

*1 grueling: へとへとに疲れさせる、厳しい
*2 herded(v): 群れを成して行く
*3 president: Pが大文字の時は大統領を指しますが、基本的には組織の長のことです。（議長、会長など）この場合は、会社の長、つまり社長です。 

一週間のひどい研修が終わり、僕がすっかり疲れてしまっていたころ、僕たちがこの研修から"卒業"する時がやってきた。その日、僕たちはみんな特別な部屋に行き、そこで社長のスピーチを聞くことになっていた。

 It was not immediately apparent to me as to(*1) how or(*2) why this meeting was so important to the Japanese staff and to the foreign teacher trainers, as meeting a president of a company wasn't really something I have ever done back in my country(*3).

*1 as to: ～については、～についていえば
*2 A or B: AやB Beef or chicken? のように「AかＢ(のどちらか)」というイメージの強いorですが、「ＡやＢ」のように物を並列して述べるときにも使えます。
*3 back in my country: 自分の国では　英語ネイティブの方が良く使う表現です。

僕はこのことについてすぐに理解ができなかった。どのように、そしてどうしてこの集会がそんなにも日本人スタッフや、外国人の研修担当にとって重要なのか、わからなかった。自分が働いている会社の社長に会うなんてことは、自分の国では経験したことがなかったから。

 I don't even think I knew the names of the president of the handful(*1) of jobs I worked in. Anyway, it was strange to me. This was the moment where I would learn about the concept of "company pet" (shachiku), but more on that later.

*1 handful: 一握りの、少量の

僕は、今まで自分が勤めたいくらかの会社の社長の名前すら知っているとは思えなかった。ともかく、これは僕にとって奇妙な出来事だった。。そして、これが僕が"社畜"文化について学ぶことになる瞬間だったんだけど、このことについてはまた今度詳しく書こうと思う。

As for the meeting, it was a short speech by a man who seemed nice enough. He gave a speech(*1) in Japanese, and it was translated to us by one of the Japanese staff. He then read out a quote by a German philosopher, in English. I don't remember much of it, but it sounded like some motivational speech where he expects us to be(*2) the best and to go above and beyond(*3) in our job. 

*1 give a speech: 「スピーチをする」というとき、動詞はgiveを使います。コロケーションを正しく覚えるとより自然な英語が話せるようになります。
*2 expect A to do: Aに～してほしいと思っている。
*3 go above and beyond: 求められる以上の働きをする

その集会の中身は、まあまあ善良そうに見える一人の男によるスピーチが行われた。彼は、日本語でスピーチをして、それを日本人スタッフが翻訳していた。それから、彼はドイツの哲学者の言葉は英語で読み上げた。あんまりこのことについては覚えていないんだけど、それは熱意のこもったスピーチで、彼は僕たちが最高の仕事をすることを望んでいて、さらに期待以上の仕事をしてほしいと思っているように聞こえた。

The thing I found odd was that the president of a company that markets English language education couldn't speak English. I also found it a bit alarming(*1) that he spoke to us as if(*2) this were a long term career job... In Canada people expect you to do your job properly, but if it's a job that pays very low, nobody pretends to expect(*3) you to work in your job forever, but this is the kind of feeling I got listening to this man... 

*1 alarming: 不安になる、驚くべき
*2 as if(conj): (接続詞)まるで～するかのように、あたかも～であるみたいに
*3 pretend to do: ～するふりをする

僕が奇妙だと思ったのは、英語教育で商売をしている会社の社長が、英語を話せないという事だった。また、僕は彼がまるでこの仕事が長期間働くための仕事のように話していることに不安を感じた。カナダでは、きちんと仕事をすることは期待されるけど、あまり給料の高くない仕事なら誰も、人々がその仕事に長い間従事するとは思わない。でも、社長の話を聞いて、社長は僕たちにそうすることを期待しているように思えたのだった…。

Indeed, I thought I would stay with my company for at least four years before I would finally move on... And I also thought that maybe it was only my company that worshiped(*1) the president as if he were the Shogun speaking to his Samurai, and that other companies wouldn't be so weird(*2)... Boy was I ever wrong...

*1 worship: 崇拝する
*2 weird: 奇妙な、風変わりな

本当に、僕は少なくとも4年はこの仕事をするだろうと思った。そして、僕は、まるで将軍が侍に話しているかの如く、社長のことを崇拝する会社はここだけだろうと思っていたし、他の会社はこんなにヘンテコではないだろうと考えていた。あぁ…だけどそれは間違っていた。

Finally, we were all taken to the Shinkansen station and sent to our local schools. From then on I would meet my new manager and coworkers. Now my life begins!

そしてついに、僕たちは新幹線の駅にへと連れられて、配属先へ移動した。それから、僕は配属校のマネージャーや同僚たちへ会うことになっていた。さあ、僕の生活のはじまりだ！
