ダリエン地峡 (Darién Gap) の情勢についての記事。

ダリエン地峡はこのサイトによれば、以下のようなエリアだそうです。

The Darién Gap is an imposing obstacle on one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes. The remote, roadless crossing on the border between Colombia and Panama consists of more than sixty miles of dense rain forest, steep mountains, and vast swamps. It is the only overland path connecting Central and South America. Over the past few years, it has become a leading transit point for migrants in search of work and safety in the United States, as authorities have cracked down on other routes by air and sea.

長さは60マイル以上なので100km以上ありますね。コロンビアからパナマに出るのですが、移民たちにとって、アメリカやカナダに逃れるための重要な通過点のようです。

ラテンアメリカ (Latin America) に位置するダリエン地峡を通過した人数が記録的な数になったそうです。国連はより大規模な地域的解決策 (greater regional solutions) が必要だと述べています。

ネパールやアフガニスタンなど遠国から来た移民 (migrants who come from as far away as Nepal and Afghanistan)にとって世界で最も過酷で (desperate) 極めて危険な (perilous) 行程となる場所の一つと言われています。

perilously も重要。come perilously close to 名詞 [doing] で「～に陥りそうになる、～しそうになる」。to 以下には危険な行為が来ます。

最近のデータによれば、今年最初の7か月で (in the first seven months of this year) 25万人近くの移民や難民 (refugees) が徒歩で (on foot) この密林地帯を抜けたそうです。昨年の記録的な人数をすでに超えています (surpass 2022’s record high)。

ちなみに去年は「前代未聞の年」といわれ、24万8284人がダリエン地峡を通過したそうです。それを超えるとは......。

この地峡を通過する人たちの大半 (the majority) はベネズエラ人 (Venezuelan) で、ハイチ (Haiti) やエクアドル (Ecuador) からの移民も多く、コロンビア (Colombia) やペルー (Peru) からの移民も少なからずいるようです。

このダリエン地峡はコロンビアとパナマの間にあるのですが、世界で最も危険な横断路の一つとされています (one of the world’s riskiest crossings)。険しい山々 (steep mountains)、過酷な気象条件 (extreme weather conditions)、危険な河川 (dangerous rivers)、強盗やレイプの危険性 (risk of robbery and rape) などがあるそうです。

UNHCR は、安全で正規の移民ルートを発見することの緊急性 (the urgency of finding safe and regular migration pathways) を強調したうえで、危険な旅をする人数の多さ (the high numbers making the dangerous journey) は、彼らの絶望 (desperation) やこの状況に対するより良い対応を取るための共同的・地域的アプローチの必要性 (the need for a collaborative and regional approach) を反映していると述べていました。

UNHCR の Regional Director である José Samaniego 氏は、国連機関 (UN agencies) は難民や移民の緊急の要請に対応する (adress the urgent needs of ...) ための活動を強化している (step up their activities) と述べていました。特に、食料、シェルター、医療品 (medical care) が重要だそうです。
