さて、この土地に、羊飼いたちが、野宿で夜番をしながら羊の群れを見守っていた。すると、主の使いが彼らのところに来て、主の栄光が回りを照らしたので、彼らはひどく恐れた。

御使いは彼らに言った。「恐れることはありません。今、私はこの民全体のためのすばらしい喜びを知らせに来たのです。

きょうダビデの町で、あなたがたのために、救い主がお生まれになりました。この方こそ主キリストです。あなたがたは、布にくるまって飼葉おけに寝ておられるみどりごを見つけます。これが、あなたがたのためのしるしです。」

すると、たちまち、その御使いといっしょに、多くの天の軍勢が現れて、神を賛美して言った。 「いと高き所に、栄光が、神にあるように。地の上に、平和が、御心にかなう人々にあるように。」

御使いたちが彼らを離れて天に帰ったとき、羊飼いたちは互いに話し合った。「さあ、ベツレヘムに行って、主が私たちに知らせてくださったこの出来事を見て来よう。」

そして急いで行って、マリヤとヨセフと、飼葉おけに寝ておられるみどりごとを捜し当てた。それを見たとき、羊飼いたちは、この幼子について告げられたことを知らせた。

それを聞いた人たちはみな、羊飼いの話したことに驚いた。しかしマリヤは、これらのことをすべて心に納めて、思いを巡らしていた。

羊飼いたちは、見聞きしたことが、全部御使いの話のとおりだったので、神をあがめ、賛美しながら帰って行った。

ルカによる福音書 2:8-20

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
