壮大な宇宙に浮かぶ蒼い星
それは、小さな小さな点
今、ここに地に足を着けた私たちの
大切な星。。。
この星に流れる大気を
吸い込み
この星に吹く風を
頬に浴びて
この星に届く
太陽という名の光を
魂の中まで浴びて
生きている

今は亡きカール・セーガン博士のナレーションで、壮大な宇宙と
そして私たちの星、地球の生命誕生のストーリーを語った、心に強く残る
番組でした。

ボイジャー１号が積んでいたゴールデンレコードには、１１５枚の画像、
地球上の様々な自然音や、人の声、音楽、５５の言語の挨拶が収録されています。
いつか、遠い宇宙のどこかでそれを発見し見てくれることを願って
作られたものでした。
１９９０年、そのボイジャー１号から撮影した地球の画像。。。
小さな小さな点をペイル・ブルー・ドットと呼びました。

　以下は、ペイル・ブルー・ドットについて、カールセーガン博士が解説したものです。

From  this distant vantage point,
the Earth might not seem of any particular interest.
この遠く離れた場所から地球を見ると、
あまり興味深い場所には見えない。
But for us, it's different.
しかし、私たちにとっては違う。
Consider again that dot.
この点をよく見てほしい。
That's here, that's home, that's us.
あれがここ、あれが故郷、あれが私たちだ。
On it everyone you love, everyone you know,
ここに、あなたが愛する人、あなたが知ってる人、全員が乗っている。
everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, 
lived out their lives.
今まで聞いたことがない人も、既に生涯を終えた人もだ。
The aggregate of our joy and suffering,
私たちの喜びと苦しみの数々も
thousand of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines,
何千もの自信に満ちた宗教、政治主張、経済主義も、
every hunter and forager, every hero and coward,
狩人も採集者も、英雄も臆病者も
every king and peasant, every young couple in love,
every mother and father,
王様も農民も、愛する若いカップルや
母親と父親
hopeful child, inventor and explorer,
希望に満ちた子供達、発明家と冒険家も、
every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician,
道徳の教師も、腐敗した政治家も、
every "superstar", every "supreme leader",
全ての「スーパースター」や「最高指導者」も、
every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there
聖人や罪人、人類の歴史における全ての人々が、ここに住んでいる。
-on the mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
ー全て、この太陽の光の上の、塵にも等しいこの場所に。
The Earth is very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.
地球は、広大な宇宙の中のとても小さなステージだ。
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals
and emperors so that,
全ての将軍や指導者たちがここで流した血の川は
in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of
a fraction of a dot.
勝利と栄光の名のもとに、この点の、そのごく一部の、
束の間の支配者になるために。。。
Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of
this pikel
この点の片隅にいる住人が、別の片隅にいる
on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants
ほとんど見た目の同じな住人に対して
of some other corner, how  frequent their misunderstandings,
どれほど残虐な仕打ちをしてきたか。どれほど多くの誤解をしてきたか
how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
どれほど熱心に人同士が殺し合うことか。どれほど激しい憎しみを
持っていることか
our posturing, our imagined self-importance,
私たちの気取った態度、思い込みや自惚れ
the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe,
私たちは宇宙の中で何か特別な存在なんだという錯覚
are challenged by this point of pale light.
この淡い光の一点が、それらを教えてくれる
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.
私たちの地球は、大きな宇宙の闇に包まれた、孤独な一点に過ぎない。
In our obscurity, in all this vastness,
この広大な宇宙の中では、私たちは無名の存在だ。
there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
私達自身を除いて、他に助けてくれる者は誰もいない。
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life.
地球は、生命が存在していることが確認されている唯一の星だ。
There is nowhere else, at least in the near future,
少なくとも近い将来、私達人類が他に移住できるような場所はない。
to which our species  could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet.
例え他の星に訪問することが可能だとしても、住むことは無理だ。
Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make  our stand.
好き嫌いに関わらず、我々の唯一の住む場所は、地球だ。
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience.
天文学は、ひとを謙虚にさせ、人間の思い上がりを知ることができる学問だという
There is perhaps no better demonstration
この画像ほどそれがわかる者はないだろう
of the folly of human conceits than this distant image
遥か彼方からこの景色を見るほどには
of our tiny world.
この小さな私たちの小さな小さな世界を
To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another,
私たちは、もっとお互いを尊重し、お互いに真心を持ち
and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
そして、この小さな青い点を、大切にしていく必要がある。私たちが知る
たったひとつのふるさとで。
