むだに広い庭？ A huge yard, but is it wasteful?

私の実家は車の板金工場で、ガーデニングどころか地面はコンクリート。自立してからはずっとアパート暮らしで、ベランダ菜園でした。

My brother (and our father before him) runs an auto-body shop in Japan, so our yard is covered with concrete. There’s no space for gardening at all. And when I left there, I always lived in apartments, so my garden was limited to my balcony.

ベランダの幅は人一人がたつぐらいの幅しかなく、その狭い空間に、上は洗濯もの、下はエアコンの室外機と、所せましのその限られたスペースで植物を育てていました。

Balconies in Japan are very narrow—barely enough for a person to stand in them. Plus, we have to hang our laundry there to dry, and the air conditioner also takes up room. But even in that tiny space, I grew some plants.

一方、主人のほうはミシシッピの海沿いの町で生まれ育ちました。出会ったころから家は庭が広いと話していたのですが、ビデオ越しの主人（遠距離恋愛でした）はいつも暗い部屋にいましたし、日本人の私にはその広さは想像できませんでした。

On the other hand, my husband grew up in a town by the water. He told me that his house had a huge yard, but I couldn't imagine how big at the time, because he was always in a dark room when we chatted via Skype (long-distance relationship). And I think Japanese people normally can’t imagine living in a house with such a big yard.

なんと…その土地の広さは...東京ドーム1.5個分！！！

Believe it or not…that yard is one and a half times the size of Tokyo Dome!!!

(When Japanese compare sizes, we always think of the Tokyo Dome stadium for some reason.)

主人が誕生日に義父母からプレゼントをもらったり、ちょっと高いものをほしがったりするたびに、「オリン（主人の名前）はプリンスだからね」と冗談で言っていたのですが、まさか本当に大地主のプリンスだったとは！

Everytime he got a present from his parents or he wanted expensive things, I always teased him by saying “You are a prince.” But I never could have guessed that he was a true prince with a huge piece of property.

とはいっても、在宅翻訳者のかせぎなんてたかが知れたもの。いつもそれを上回るような出費（音楽機材が主）が続いています。

Having said that, he can’t earn a lot as a translator working from home. And his expenses (mainly for music equipment) always surpass his income.

お金はないけど土地だけはある王子様...悲しい。

A poor prince living on a huge property…sad.

土地を売るという手もありますが、先祖代々の土地でもあるし、環境のために森を守りたいという気持ちもあります。

We could sell a part of the property, but it’s been passed down in his family for generations. And we also we want to preserve the woods for the sake of the environment.

というわけで、この広い土地を活用する手はない！たくさん野菜や花を育てよう!　と2人の気持ちが一致。

That’s why we both agreed that we have to use this spacious land to grow a lot of flowers and vegetables!

さっそく私はベランダ菜園から夢の本格的な家庭菜園実現へとワクワクして、きゅうりやピーマンの苗を買ってきました。

I was excited to upgrade from the balcony to a proper garden, so I bought some cucumber and pepper seedlings.

すると翌日義母から、なんと園芸用の土のプレゼントが !

The next day, I got a gift of potting soil from my mother-in-law!

　

私　          「えっ、家にいくらでも土があるのにこれ使うの？」
主人と義母「家の土地は粘土質で固く、そのままでは使えないよ」

Me: “Oh, should we use this? We have a lot of soil on our property.”
Husband: “Our soil is mostly hard clay, so we can’t use it like that”

土地があるのに土が使えないなんて？！

What?! We CAN’T USE THE SOIL even though we have a huge property?!

結局、ベランダ菜園と同じように鉢植え栽培をすることに。悲しい・・・。

I ended up planting the seedlings in pots, just like I did in my small balcony garden…sad.

私たちは将来に向けて土づくりから始めることにしました。
