David Rolfe Graeber（1961年-2020年）：

アメリカの人類学者で、ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクスの人類学教授を務めた。

『負債論──貨幣と暴力の5000年』、『官僚制のユートピア──テクノロジー、構造的愚かさ、リベラリズムの鉄則』、『ブルシット・ジョブ──クソどうでもいい仕事の理論』などの著作で知られる。

1961年、ニューヨークのユダヤ系労働者階級の家庭に生まれる。母のルース・ルービンスタインは縫製労働者であり、1930年代に国際婦人服飾労働者組合が上演したミュージカルで主役を演じた。父のケネスは、青年共産主義者連盟に所属し、スペイン革命に参加し、スペイン内戦に従軍した印刷職人。少年時代の趣味はマヤの象形文字の翻訳。考古学者から評価され奨学金を獲得。16歳からアナキストであったと語る。
1984 年、ニューヨーク州立大学パーチェス校で人類学の学士号。
1987年、シカゴ大学で修士号を取得。

※4,500人以上が彼を支持する請願書に署名し、マーシャル・サーリンズ、ローラ・ネーダー、マイケル・タウシッヒ、モーリス・ブロックなどがこの決定は政治的な動機によるものだと訴えた。１年のサバティカル中に20件の公募ですべて落とされ、イギリスへの学術亡命を決意する。

2007年、ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス・カレッジ講師(Reader)。
2010年、歴史人類学から借金と社会制度の歴史的な関係を探究した代表作“Debt: the First 5000 Years”『負債論：貨幣と暴力の5000年』（以文社、2016年）
2011年、ウォール街占拠運動。「 We are the 99% 」というスローガンで有名に。

2013年、『Strike!』誌に投稿したエッセイでブルシット・ジョブズという概念を生み出し、「従業員ですらその存在を正当化できないほど完全に無意味、不必要、または有害な有給雇用」の蔓延が17カ国で翻訳。
2015年、現代資本主義における官僚制と管理主義を批判した“Utopia of Rules”『官僚制のユートピア──テクノロジー、構造的愚かさ、リベラリズムの鉄則』（以文社、2017年）で、官僚制に安住する現代社会に警鐘。
2018年、“Bullshit Jobs: A Theory”『ブルシット・ジョブ──クソどうでもいい仕事の理論』（岩波書店、2020年）

2020年、休暇中のヴェネツィアで突然亡くなった。

ブルシット・ジョブ・テーゼ（BJT）： ＠ロイヤル・ソサエティ・オブ・アーツ（RSA）の講演から

BJTは2 つの主張に基づいています。
第一に、労働者は実際に自分の仕事を嫌っているか、少なくとも仕事に意味や喜びを見いだしていないということ。
私たちが仕事をする唯一の理由は、必要性と労働倫理による強制的な効果からです。

第二に、すべての仕事の半分が「無意味」であり、社会的価値がなく、個人的、職業的、または社会的なコストを費やすことなく廃止できる可能性があります。
それらが存在する唯一の理由は、ボスに地位や権力があること、または時間が満たされていることを示すためです。

この 2 つの主張は、「雇用形態は、それを行う人々にとってまったく無意味であるとみなされる」という見解によって結合されます。

2015年のYouGov世論調査に基づいている。この世論調査では、英国の労働者の37％は、自分たちの仕事は存在する必要がないと考えていることが示されている。問題は、37％もの人が自分の仕事は「世界に対して有意義な貢献」をしていないと回答したことです。
