『ユーラシアの夢』 東西の異なる文化の音とことば

言葉にはそれぞれ、独自の歴史、文化がある。詩や歌が、翻訳しにくいのは、それぞれの言葉には、その国の歴史の伝統から来る意味がひそんでいるからだ。しかし、それで創作する詩の響きとリズムが、その文化での音楽のルーツとなる。ルーミーの言葉、世阿弥の言葉、英国文学の伝統に、それぞれ独自の意味と響きがある。
僕は小学2年生から中学生の終わりまでルーミーなどのペルシャの伝統曲を歌う義父のところで育った。ルーミーは中世時代に詩、ダンス、音楽を含んで哲学思想を語る独特のスーフィーのムーブメントを創立した。その詩の内容は、今日読むと、とても科学的で現代的だ。今回、ルーミーの詩を歌うアミンは、僕の義父と同じスタイルで歌う素晴らしい伝統音楽の歌手だ。演奏は尺八と箏という日本伝統楽器を含む珍しいヴァージョンになる。
モーガン・フィッシャーは、僕が13才の頃、義父と共にニューヨークのステージで初めてライブを見た。ロック・バンドのモット・ザ・フープルとクイーンのライブだった。両方でモーガンが演奏をしていた。日本に住んでから、彼はアンビエント・ミュージックをはじめ、ジャンルを越えて幅広く活動している。日本伝統音楽の代表者の一人である尺八奏者の中村明一さんと長くコラボレーションをしてきた。モーガンのアーバン・スーフィーも演奏する。
10代半ばに読んだ本で最も好きな小説の一つに、漢詩の連句をシェークスピアなどの英国文学の伝統に基く英語詩に訳された「紅楼夢」という物語があった。素晴らしい翻訳だった。漢字には漢字の伝統があり、一つ一つの漢字に、英語にはできない別の意味があったり、言葉には直接にない別の状況を連想させるものがある。英語の詩には、英語独自の言葉のメタファーがある。これによって言葉が直接に語っていない別の意味や連想させるものがある。歴史と文化が遠く離れているほど、同じように物事を理解できることは難しい。僕の3人目の父となったのは、英国の人で、僕も英語で育っていた。自分の人生経験を使って翻訳するので、最終的にはパーソナルな言葉と音楽になる。今回、古典的な英語と日本語化した漢詩の語りを含む曲も演奏する。
「夢枕」は異なる感性との出会いを橋渡する。
新たなジャンル、文化をを創造していく可能性を提示する。

Concert Information for "Eurasian Dreams" 6/24 (Thurs.) 2021
(Words and Music from different cultures in the East and West - Rumi from Persia, Zeami from Japan and the traditions of English culture )- Text by Ayuo
Words have their own unique histories and cultural traditions. The reason why poems and songs cannot be translated accurately is that behind the words are the meanings that come from the history and traditions of each different nation and tribe. And the sounds and rhythms of each different language create the basis for the music of each particular culture. Rumi's poetry and stories, Zeami's Noh plays, the traditions in English literature all have their own unique meanings and sounds.
From the time I was in the second grade in primary school till the end of middle school, I lived with a step-father who came from a family of Persian traditional court musicians. He sang many songs with poetry by Rumi and other Sufi poets. Rumi's followers created their own artistic movement in the 13th century including poetry, music, and dance within the Sufi traditions called the Mewlewī Sufis, also known as Whirling Dervishes. Even when read today, his writings are scientific and are relevant to contemporary society. Amin is a very gifted singer of traditional music who sings in the same traditions as my step-father. This concert will present a unique version of this music featuring Japanese traditional instruments such as the Koto and the Shakuhachi.
I first saw Morgan Fisher performing on stage in New York City when I was 13 years old. It was at a concert on Broadway featuring Mott The Hoople and Queen. Ever since living in Japan, he has been performing ambient music as well as many other styles of music. He has long collaborated with the Shakuhachi player, Akikazu Nakamura. His composition "Urban Sufi" will also be performed.
One of my personal favorite books is a translation of the 18th-century Chinese novel "A Dream of Red Mansions" into English. The translation is unique because the British and Chinese couple who translated it was aware of both the traditions in English literature from as far back as the Shakespearean period as well as the traditions in ancient Chinese poetry. Each Chinese character (known as Kanji in Japan) have their own historical background and hidden meanings which function similar to metaphors in the English language but cannot be translated to a different language. The English language also has meanings from its own tradition that sometimes seem superficial when it is translated into languages such as Japanese because it comes from a very different historical and traditional background. The farther apart the cultural backgrounds are, the more it is difficult to understand things in the same way. I was raised in New York City in the English language. My first stepfather with whom I lived from my second year in primary school till the end of middle school was Iranian and my second stepfather was British. Life experiences form the backbone of one's artistic creations, so I wound up writing music and poetry that is very personal and unique to my own life. This concert includes "They sat on two bamboo stools and gazed at the moon and its reflection in the lake", in a Japanese translation I made from the English translation of the Chinese traditional poetry section in an episode of "A Dream of Red Mansions". Ayuo has recorded 18 solo albums for labels such as Epic-Sony, JVC Victor, Midi, John Zorn's Tzadik label, and others, in which he recorded with Peter Hammill, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carlos Alomar, Takehisa Kosugi, Maddy Prior, Danny Thompson, Clive Deamer, Dave Mattacks and many others. Growing up with an Iranian step-father in a very international environment with American, British, and Chinese people in New York City, his music brings together the ancient musical link on the Silkroad from Europe to Persia, Central Asia, China, Korea, and Japan by exploring the possibilities of using ancient music to create a new contemporary style of music. He is also a poet, essayist, and illustrator, and his autobiography was published in 2018.

Akikazu Nakamura (Shakuhaci, Compositions)
Studied under Katsuya Yokoyama and several masters of the Komuso shakuhachi tradition. Studied composition and jazz theory at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music Graduate School. Has performed in more than 150 cities and forty countries worldwide under the sponsorship of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others. While still grounding his roots in the classical tradition handed down by Komuso monks, Nakamura has delved into different musical genres including Western classical music, rock, and jazz. Received much recognition for his performances and recordings. Also active as a composer. A member of the Japan Society of Contemporary Music. Teaches at Tokyo Gakugei Univ., Yamanashi Gakuin Univ. Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music, Graduate School of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. His literary work “Missoku changes your body” and “The Overtone” have created sensations in Japan.
Junzo Tateiwa (Percussion)
Junzo Tateiwa is a multi-percussionist specializing in Middle Eastern and Indian music. He studied Indian Tabla with Masaki Yoshimi and Prafulla Athalye, Darbuka with Susu Ppanin, and Serdar BAGTIR., Frame Drum with Glen Velez, Tonbak with Farbod Yadollahi, and Iranian Daf with Hossein Rezainia. He also studied Drums with Minoru Sakata. He not only performs the classical traditional music of the Middle East and India, but he also uses its instruments and musical styles in rock, pops, jazz, and classical music. He creates music for both traditional Indian and Middle Eastern dances as well as for contemporary dance. He is also active as a composer-arranger for electronic instrument makers such as Korg and others.

Mizuyo Komiya (25-string Koto)
Mizuyo Komiya began to study the Koto with her grandmother, the first Soju Nosaka. She studied composition and world ethnic music at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. 2 of her solo CDs are released from Pacific Moon, "Aya - Color" and "Children - Lullaby". She also self-produced her CD, "Zumik Music". In 2020, she presented a memorial concert for her mother Keiko Nosaka, an internationally known performer of the 25-string Koto, who had passed away the previous year. She is a member of the board of the Ikuta-school of Koto Association, a member of the Japan Sankyoku Association, and is the head of the Koto school, Matsu no Mi Kai. She performs under the name Eri Nosaka when performing traditional music, but as Mizuyo Komiya when performing contemporary compositions.

Yoko Ueno (Vocals, Accordion, Bass)
Yoko Ueno is well known as a singer with a diversity of different vocal colors and styles, with which she sings acapella voice music, rock, pops, ethnic music, contemporary music among other styles of music. For over 30 years, She has composed, arranged, and sung on movie scores, animations, and commercials. She has also been active as a performer of improvisational music in live performances. From 2011, she has been active in creating new compositions in the experimental music scene.
Amin (Persian classical singer)
He started voice training at age of 4 for singing Quran and he won various municipal and provincial awards for singing Quran during elementary school and junior high school. After entering Amirkabir University of Technology he started voice training for Persian classical singing. He received his masters and a Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering from The University of Tokyo and during this time he performed Persian traditional music in Japan in events such as "1001 Nights" and with Ayuo's group.
Morgan Fisher (Keyboards, Electronics)
Born in London 1950/1/1. 1973-76 played with Mott the Hoople, produced by David Bowie. In 1980 produced “Miniatures” (51 one-minute tracks by Robert Fripp, Michael Nyman, Pretenders, XTC,Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Damned, etc. Made vol. 2 in 2000). In 1982was keyboardist for Queen's tour. In 1985 moved to Japan to create ambient and improvised music; composed TV commercial music for Cat Power, Jose Feliciano, Zap Mama, and many other singers and major clients. Worked with Yoko Ono, Dip in the Pool, Haruomi Hosono, Kokoo, etc. Owns many rare vintage analog keyboards; performs concerts at his home studio. Is also very active as a light artist (abstract photographer).
