【日英対訳】ECCは語学学習システムの特許
ECCは、日本人のようなノンネイティブ特有の英語の発音をAIが聞き分けるデバイスを発明し、特許を取得しました（特許7195593号）。
英訳
ECC invented and patented a device that enables AI to distinguish English pronunciation patterns particular to non-native speakers, such as Japanese speakers (Patent No. 7195593).
発明の名称はつぎの通りです。
「語学学習用装置および語学学習用プログラム」
The title of the invention is as follows.
“A device for foreign language learning and a program for foreign language learning”
ジャパニーズ・イングリッシュを聴き分けるデバイスはこれまでにも開発されましたが、日本人が完全に英語音素に移行することは困難であり、英語が上達しても、発音に日本語音素と英語音素が混在した形となり、これをデバイスが完全に聞き取れることは困難でした。
While devices that can distinguish between Japanese and English have already been developed, it has been difficult for Japanese people to completely transition to using English phonemes. Even when learners improve their English, their pronunciation tends to mix together Japanese and English phonemes, which makes it difficult for these devices to fully understand them.
今回のECCのデバイスは、
①日本人の発音、②ネイティブの発音、①と②の混在した発音
を判断してくれます。
The new ECC device can determine whether a pronunciation is that of (1) Japanese speakers, (2) native English speakers, and a mix of (1) and (2).
明細書に挙がっている例は、
「cake」という単語には、
①英語音素のみからなる音素データ（KEYK）
②日本語音素のみからなる音素データ（ke:ki）
③混合音素データ（KEYku）
が対応付けられています。
An example given in the specification is as follows.
The term “cake” is associated with:
(1) phoneme data consisting only of English phonemes (KEYK),
(2) phoneme data consisting only of Japanese phonemes (ke:ki),
and (3) mixed phoneme data (KEYku).
つまり、日本人の初心者は「ケーキ」と発音し、少し上級者は「ケイク（KEYku）」と発音します（正しくは、[keik]）。
In other words, a Japanese person who is a beginner at English will pronounce “cake” as [ke:ki], while a slightly more advanced learner will pronounce it as [keyku] (the correct pronunciation is [keik]).
「判定部」というこのシステムの部署が、ユーザは、
①英語寄り（ネイティブスピーカー）
②日本語寄り（初心者）
③それらの中間（中上級者）か
を判定します。
The “determination unit” of this system determines if a user:
i) speaks with an English pronunciation (native English speaker),
ii) speaks with a Japanese pronunciation (beginner),
or iii) speaks with a pronunciation somewhere in between (intermediate or advanced)
「フィードバック部」がユーザの誤った発音に対して、キャラクターにより「意味が分からない」又は「異なる意味として認識」の振舞いをします。
The “feedback unit” responds to a user pronouncing something incorrectly by a character exhibiting the behaviors of “not understanding the meaning” or “recognizing the word as a different meaning.”
こうして楽しみながら英語学習できます。日本の恥の文化が日本人の英語が喋れないひとつの要因とも言われます。
スマホ上でキャラクターが教えてくれれば、恥をかくこともなく、英語が上達できます。オンライン英会話は一対一とはいっても、先生の前では恥をかきます。相手がキャラクターであれば恥を恐れることもなく、これは日本人のキャラに合ったデバイスであるといえます。
In this way, a user can learn English while having fun. It is said that the culture of shame in Japan is one of the reasons why Japanese people cannot speak English well. If a character teaches you on your smartphone, you can improve your English without any embarrassment. Even though online English conversation is one-on-one, some people may still feel embarrassed in front of a teacher. If the other person is a character, there is no fear of embarrassment, so this device is perfect for Japanese people.
