The Global Challenge of Food Waste. - Mar. 28, 2024.

Our insatiable appetite is creating an unequal world where the rich grow richer and the poor, poorer. An ABC news article reports that over one billion meals were wasted each day in 2022. This contributes to about 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which astonishingly is almost five times the total emissions of the aviation sector.

Although there is theoretically enough food to feed everyone globally, the reality remains uneven. On a positive note, the article mentions that some developed countries have started reducing their food waste. From an economic standpoint, our taxes might be funding the disposal of this wasted food. If true, this practice needs to change.

Japan's efficient distribution and waste collection systems make it easy for us to access and dispose of food. We're at a point where we must evaluate if these systems positively impact both humanity and the environment.
