AIだって聞き間違える？ニュージーランドのアーダーン前首相の最後の議会演説を使って検証してみました

今年の1月に首相辞任を発表され、水曜日(2023年4月5日)に、議会で最後の演説をされたニュージーランドのジャシンダ・アーダーン前首相のYouTube動画(Discovery NZのNewshubチャンネルより)で、自動生成(Auto-generate）による英語字幕に、どれくらい聞き間違いがあるのかを調べてみました。

長くなったので、半分ほど(プラスおまけの2点)を掲載しています。

AIの機械学習アルゴリズムによって自動生成された英語の字幕は、英子も含め、英語を母国語としない人たちよりは優れていると思いますが、それでも、完全ではありません。

今なら、その間違いに気づくことができる英子ですが、英語に慣れていなかった頃は、そういったインターネット上に存在する「不完全英語」を、「完全英語」だと信じ切っていました。

インターネット上に存在する英語を母国語とする人たちの英語の中にも、そういった英語のちょっとした間違いはたくさん存在します。

この動画だけでなく、アーダーン前首相の演説を文字で報道しているメディアの中にも、実際に話された演説とは、微妙に違う英文を掲載しているものがありました。

完璧な英語を話せるようになるにはどうすればよいのかと、今でもよく聞かれます。完璧な英語を目指して英語を学習している方々が、今もたくさんいらっしゃるみたいです。

そんな下手英の読者の皆さんに、世界で目にする英語には、不完全なものもたくさんあるということを、この記事を通じて知っていただけたらと思います。

※人や場所の名前等の固有名詞の聞き間違いは仕方がないと思いますが、聞いたことがない単語を耳にすると、無理やり知っている単語に結び付けてしまう例として、参考になると思います。

※この後、固有名詞である名前が続いたことと、あまりにも長くなるので、ここまでで区切りました。ただ、演説の最後に近い下記の2点は、今では英語圏でも当たり前のように使われている「bento(弁当)」という単語が聞き取れていない点と、「warrior(戦士)」と「worrier(心配性の人)」では、音は似ていても意味は全く違ってしまうという点で参考になると思ったので、含めました。

余談：
ちなみに、ニュージーランド時間の午後5時半から行われた演説の生中継を見ていた英子は、「自動生成(Auto-generate）字幕」と同じように、最初、「warrior」と聞き取って(ニュージーランドでは「Once Were Warriors」という有名な映画もあるし、耳は自然にそちらの単語にチューニングされた模様)、困難と闘う首相だったってことなのかなぁと思いつつ、泣き虫だったという言葉とはマッチしなくて、しかも、こんな私でも首相になれたんだから誰だってなれるというメッセージの中で出てきたし、実は「worrier」だと気づくまで、頭の中が？？？になっていました。
