2024/07/05「怠け者」"Sloth"

真夏の午後、大学のキャンパスは閑散としていた。友人と二人、講義が終わった後のゆったりとした時間を楽しんでいた。木陰に座り込み、涼しい風に当たりながら、特に目的もなく会話を続けた。

「最近、なんにもやる気が出ねぇ。『怠け者』になっちまってるんだよな」と友人が呟いた。彼の声には少しの自嘲が混じっていた。

「動物のナマケモノが憑りつかれたのかな？」僕は冗談交じりに言った。「そんな感じかもな。今まさに、ナマケモノのあのまったりとした動作に激しく同感してる。まあ、ナマケモノは本当の意味での『怠け者』てわけじゃないけどな」と、友人は苦笑した。

僕も笑い返して、「たまにはこういう時間も必要だと思うよ。何もしないで、ただぼーっとするのも悪くないよ」と付け加えた。

「確かに。俺たちも講義の課題やレポート、ゼミの活動に部活、それからバイト。学生なりの忙しい日々の中で、こうして一緒に過ごす時間があること自体、贅沢だよな。たまには何もしない『怠け者』になって、ゆっくりするの今後の自分のためになる、て俺は思ってる」

僕はしばらく黙っていたが、やがて小さく笑った。「君が真面目にそういうこと言うと、なんだか説得力あるな」

その後、二人はしばらくの間、木陰に座ったまま、ただ風に身を任せて過ごした。何も急ぐ必要はない、そんな時間がここにはあった。たとえ『怠け者』と言われても、こんな日もたまにはいいのかもしれない。そう感じるひとときだった。

On a midsummer afternoon, the university campus was deserted. My friend and I were enjoying the relaxed time after our lectures. We sat in the shade, feeling the cool breeze, and continued our conversation without any particular purpose.

"Recently, I can't get motivated for anything. I've turned into a 'sloth'," my friend muttered, with a hint of self-deprecation in his voice.

"Maybe you've been possessed by an actual sloth?" I joked. "It kind of feels like it. Right now, I can totally relate to that leisurely pace of a sloth. Well, sloths aren't really 'lazy' in the true sense," he added with a wry smile.

I laughed in return and added, "I think we need times like this occasionally. It's not bad to just do nothing and relax."

"True. Between our lecture assignments, reports, seminar activities, club activities, and part-time jobs, our days are pretty busy for students. Being able to spend time together like this is a luxury. Sometimes, I think being a 'sloth' and taking it slow is beneficial for our future selves."

I was silent for a while, then laughed softly. "When you say things like that seriously, it sounds quite convincing."

After that, we sat in the shade for a while, just letting the wind carry us. There was no need to rush. It was a time when we felt that even if we were called 'lazy,' days like this might not be so bad occasionally.
