山本理顕先生の建築について My Impressions of Prof. Riken Yamamoto’s Architecture

ところで今回のトピックは建築です。
こちらの拙noteでは初めての話題ですしちょっと唐突な感じもしますが、お付き合いいただければ幸いです。

さて、表題でお分かりになるかと思いますが、私は山本先生の建築作品のファンです。
その理由がなぜか上手く説明できず、どうすればいいんだろうと考えていて、このエントリーをしたためてみることにしました。

説明が目的であるからには分かりやすく書きたいのですが、正直自信がありません。なぜなら極めて感覚的な、建築に関する知識皆無の、ど素人の印象が手がかりで、そして全てだからです。
ですが、感動した！とだけ言っているよりは幾らかでもこの体験が伝われば嬉しいなと思いますので、少し書いてみたいと思います。

・四角がすごい
まず最初に先生の作品写真を拝見した時に感じたのは、Xにも呟いたのですが、とにかく四角がすごい！ということです。
それまで自分は四角をただの四角だと思っていた、でもこの四角は全く違う、空間の捉え方からして異なるに違いない、と、そう感じました。
その四角は、単に空間を限界付けるために切り取る枠ではなく、もっと積極的な意義を備えた、美的な意味で機能的な、そんな四角に思えたのです。月並みな言葉になりますが、生きている四角、もっと言うと、立ち上がる空間そのもののような、四角に思えたのかもしれません。

・不思議な曲線
こちらはまだ四角ほどにその謎が解明できていないのですが、地を這う生き物のような、そんな曲線を見た気がします。曲線を多用する建築家は多いのかもしれませんが、山本先生の曲線は、自立した幾何学というより空間の間を縫うような、誤解を恐れずに言えば迷いを含んだような、そんな曲線に感じました。魅力的ですね。

・凹凸
これは集合住宅の作品の写真を見て感じたことですが、横の広がりと縦の広がりがとても自由に交錯しているように感じられました。横が横であることにも、縦が縦であることにも縛られすぎない、そんなような。四角の素晴らしさとも、もしかすると関係しているかもしれないですね。

・コミュニティの思想
私は読むのが遅いためまだ先生の本は拝読できていないのですが、先生のプリツカー賞受賞記念のスピーチをYouTubeで拝見させていただいた際、ハンナ・アーレントを引用しつつご説明されていた、先生の共有空間の考え方に目から鱗な思いがしました。
例えば玄関など、私たちの毎日の生活にある、当たり前すぎる通路のようなもの、それまではただ通り過ぎていた、そんな空間の存在とその意味に初めて気付かされたのです。そういえばここ（玄関）は独立していない、独立した空間ではない、部屋ですらない。でも絶対に欠かせない間にあるもの、多目的で使用頻度が高く、外とのつながり、接点でもある、そんな空間。そのようなことに思いを馳せたことは今までありませんでした。これは何か未来につながる発想だ、そんな直感が陽射しのように優しく差しこむのを感じました。

My Impressions of Prof. Riken Yamamoto’s Architecture

As you may have noticed already, I’m a big fan of the architect Prof. Riken Yamamoto, who has just won the Pritzker Architecture Prize this year.
Here, let me explain briefly why his architecture attracts me so much.

1.  Grid - Cube - Rectangles - Horizontal Layers x Transparent Gates
When I first saw the photographs of his works, my eyes instantly knew what his works were meant for.  It is quite rare, because many architectural works, to me, seem to require more time to explore to find their purposes and meanings.  It was indeed his “rectangles” - his grids, which people may call them, allow us to elaborate and sophisticate our conceptions of window and wall.  They are not merely the outer nor the exterior, they are not merely the frames of the inside spaces and the rooms.  They felt as if they were created so that we could experiment if we could live on the earthy sphere by holding onto / moving through the flat, transparent horizons and gates that cross each other infinitely.

2.  Curves
His curves remind me of the creatures that crawl on the surface of the earth.  They stitch together the unfounded paths to create roads and streams.  Not necessarily geometrically featured as strongly independent structure on its own, they sometimes wonder through the forests of the earth as our grounds never stops to move, as people’s, animals’ and other lives’ dynamics decides our relations to architecture.

3. Community Philosophy
His idea of shared space inspired me most as it is given the unique importance which independent private rooms could never have.  For instance, I had never experienced the entrance of a private house, if not a grand building, as functionally so abundant and tirelessly tolerant as one of the purposes of an architecture and even beyond.  It felt almost imaginary for its regular and temporary exposure to / inclusion into our daily lives.  It was a new concept to me, to think that architecture could talk just like us.
