植物のおもしろ英語名

前回の記事でご紹介したツワブキの英語名が面白かったので、他にも何かないか、探してみました。

ツクシ

horsetail
直訳では馬のシッポ。
ツクシの他にスギナ、トクサもさすようです。
"horsetail plant"で画像検索すると、トクサとツクシとスギナが混ざって出てきます。
英語圏では、あまり区別の必要がないのでしょうか。
スギナ以外は、馬のシッポと呼ぶのはちょっと無理があるきがします。

イチョウ

ginkgo
日本語（あるいは中国語）の銀杏が語源だとか。

タンポポ

dandelion
これは有名ですね。
ラテン語由来でライオンの歯の意味。
なんとなくライオンのたてがみを想像していましたが、歯だとは...。
レイ・ブラッドベリの作品「たんぽぽのお酒」は"Dandelion Wine"です。

dandelionの他、綿毛を吹いて全部吹き飛ばすのに必要な回数が時間を表すとされる、あるいは花が日照時間にあわせて規則的に開閉することからtell-timeという呼び名、さらには根が利尿作用を持つことから、おねしょをあらわすような呼び名もあるそうです。

dandelion (n.)

Other folk names, like tell-time refer to the custom of telling the time by blowing the white seed (the number of puffs required to blow them all off supposedly being the number of the hour), or to the plant's regular opening and closing with daylight. Other names refer to its diuretic qualities (Middle English piss-a-bed, French pissenlit).

アサガオ

morning glory
直訳すると、朝の栄光、あるいは朝の賛美でしょうか。
日本語名の朝顔より、これからはじまる１日が楽しくなりそうな名前です。

ミョウガ

Japanese Ginger
直訳すると日本のショウガ。
なんと、日本語そのままMyoga Gingerともよばれるそうです。
学名もZingiber mioga。

柿

persimmon
北米先住民のポウハタン語（アルゴンキン語）に由来し、人工的に干した果実を意味するそうです。まさに干し柿ですね！

エノコログサ（ネコジャラシ）

Green bristlegrass, Fox tail grass, green foxtail
bristleは剛毛の意味。
緑の粗い毛が生えた草、緑のキツネのシッポという名前です。
みたままですね。
