July 19, 2023: Hot and Humid Summer, Funny Stories (1) （蒸し暑い夏、面白い話（１））

Japan has been sweltering for days. It is so hot that I am frustrated every day. For a change, I sometimes try to find something funny I did in my old life. When I was a child, I was not so much clever as an idiot. So I have a lot of things that make me laugh, as I recall. Among them is the one that was about a belt. That was when I was eleven or twelve years old. I have my parents buy a leather belt. But it was so long that I had to cut it in part to adjust the positions of its holes. But I did not know how to do it, and I hated asking my parents for it. So I cut a part of the belt, by my guess. It was at that moment that I found that I made a big mistake. The part had the holes needed for the belt, and the belt became out of use. I was so panicked that I tried to find a way to punch holes in the belt but to no avail.
I had kept it secret for a few days. But I had nothing I could do with the useless belt, so I was forced to tell it to my mother. It deeply astounded her, and I got a good scolding from her. Nevertheless, she bought a new one and showed me how to cut it. I learnt to have to get rid of the buckle to cut a part of the belt.
I still remember it sometimes and laugh about it alone.

　このところ蒸し暑い日が続いています。あまりに暑いので、毎日、イライラします。そんな時は、気分転換に、自分が昔やったおかしなことを思い出すことにしています。子供のころは、あまり利口ではありませんでした。それどころか、どちらかというと間抜けでした。いまでも、思い出すと、笑ってしますことが一杯あります。その一つが、ベルトに関する件です。あれは、11か12歳の時のことでした。親に皮のベルト買ってもらいました。でも、長すぎたので、穴位置を調整するために一部を切らなければならなかったのですが、切り方がわかりませんでした。親に聞くのも嫌なので、勘で、一部を切ってしまったのです。その瞬間に、大失敗したことに気付きました。切った方にベルト穴があったのです。そのため、ベルトが使い物にならなくなりました。焦って、ベルトに穴を開ける方法を探しましたが。無駄でした。
　このことを数日、秘密にしていたのですが、為す術がないので、母親に白状しました。彼女はあきれ返り、ボクをひどく叱りました。でも、新しいベルトを買って、ベルトの切り方を教えてくれました。バックルはずして、切ることをこの時学びました。
　時々、この件を思い出して、一人で笑っています。
