May 16, 2023: Greece, My Memories（ギリシャ、思い出）

As I wrote in the article I posted yesterday, I have not had so many chances to visit Greece. However, some of my memories of Greece came back to me. One of them is the Greek guards which I mentioned in the first part of my previous article. I ran into them when I walked around Athena for market surveys. I passed the Greek Parliament House and found the guards stand in front of the house. Their uniform was so unique that I stopped to see them. Then, I was lucky to see the guards mounting ceremony. It was the first and last time I saw the guards alive. But I still remember it well.
I had another problem. I had struggled very hard to communicate with Greeks in English. When I had a business meeting with my Greek customer, I found them not fluent in English and had trouble communicating with them. So I was vaguely aware of the Geeks being not fluent in English. But it was beyond my imagination. When I walked around Athens, I could hardly find the Greeks who could speak English. But sometimes, I met Greeks who spoke English well. But they were so suspicious that I was reluctant to speak to them. They suddenly walked up to me and began talking to me at a machine-gun speed. Then I knew that they were approaching me for deceiving or robbing me of something.

　前日の記事でも書いた通り、ギリシャを訪問する回数は少なかったのですが、その中でも、いくつかの記憶に残る出来事がありました。その一つが前日の記事の冒頭に述べた衛兵です。ギリシャの首都のアテネを初めて訪問した際に、市場見学をかねて市内を散策しました。その時に通ったギリシャ国会議事堂の前でこの衛兵を見たのです。衛兵の制服が、非常にユニークで思わず立ち止まってしまいました。また、ちょうど、衛兵の交代式の時間だったので、思わず見入ってしまいました。衛兵を見たのはこれが最初で最後でしたが、いまでもよく覚えています。
　別の問題もありました。ギリシャで、英語でコミュニケーションを取るのに苦労した点です。ギリシャのお客さんと商談をした時に、英語が流暢ではなく、コミュニケーションを取るのに苦労しました。なので、ギリシャの人は英語が上手ではないとうすうすは気づいていました。でも、想像以上でした。市場調査のためにアテネを散策した時、英語を話せる人はほとんどいませんでした。時々英語を上手に話す人はいました。でも、怪しげな人で、話しかける気になれませんでした。そしたら、突然、彼らが僕に近づいてきて、マシンガンのように英語を話し始めました。その時、ボクをだますか、ボクから何かを奪うために近づいてきたとわかりました。
