July 3, 2023: Karuizawa （軽井沢）
These days, it has been getting hotter and hotter. It seems to be too early to get such hot weather. It is so hot that I have the urge to go somewhere cool. I used to go to mountainous resorts when my daughter was a kid. We first went to a mountain resort in Fukushima, the Inawashiro area. The first day, we stayed at a hotel. She enjoyed swimming in the pool of the hotel with my wife. On the second day, we went to the famous lake, Lake Inawashiro.
Ｗe went to another mountain resort in Nagano, the Karuizawa area, in the next year. It was one of the busiest resorts near Tokyo. We stayed in a cottage and enjoyed walking in the woods. It also had such a large shopping centre that we walked around it. The next afternoon, we walked around the main street of the area. But it was too crowded to enjoy it. The best place in the street was a small tea room a little away from the street. It was cool and quiet. It was one of my most enjoyable trips with my family.
With regard to the area name of Karuizawa, I have been mistaken for a long time. I have been convinced that it is a unique name for the area and that it has never been used by any other town or village in Japan. But it was wrong. The geographical name, Karuizawa, comes from the feature of the terrain feature. In other words, it is used in areas having a steep mountain pass. And I have found that it is used for about ten areas in Japan.
One of them is an area in Kamagaya, Chiba. It is a small area and has only about 600 people. But it is now causing a stir. It has had no water supply, so the residents have to use groundwater for their daily lives. But lately, harmful substances have been found in the groundwater. The town is now struggling to find the cause and measures for the serious issue in the area. The area with the same geographical name is in Yokohama, too.

ここ数日、暑い日が続いています。こんなに暑くなるのは、早すぎです。あまりに暑いので、どこか涼しいところに行きたくなります。娘が子供の頃は、何度か避暑地に行ったものです。最初は福島の猪苗代に行きました。初日はホテルに泊まり、娘は妻とホテルのプールで泳いでいました。翌日は、有名な猪苗代湖へ行きました。
翌年は、長野の高原リゾート、軽井沢に行きました。そこは東京近郊で、一番賑やかな高原リゾートのひとつです。コテージに泊まり、森林浴を楽しみました。大きなショッピングモールもあり、散策しました。翌日の昼には、メインストリートを散策しました。でも、人が多すぎてあまり楽しめませんでした。通りから少し離れたところにある小さな喫茶店が一番良かったです。涼しくて静かでした。家族旅行の中で一番楽しかった旅行のひとつでした。
「軽井沢」と地名に関して、ボクは大きな間違いをしていました。ボクはてっきり、「軽井沢」はこの地域の唯一無二の地名だと思っていました。つまり、この地名は、日本の他の町や村では使われていないものだと思っていました。でも、間違いでした。「軽井沢」という地名は、地形の特徴から来ていて、険しい峠がある地域で使われているようです。そして調べてみると、日本では約10の地域でこの地名が使われていることがわかりました。そのうちのひとつが千葉県鎌ヶ谷市にある地域です。人口600人ほどの小さな地域ですが、今、世間を騒がせています。水道が通っていないため、住民は生活用水に地下水を利用しているそうです。でも、最近、その地下水に有害物質が含まれていることが判明しました。町は今、この深刻な問題の原因究明と対策に追われています。同じ地名の地域は横浜にもあるようです。
『この世で無知ほど危険なものはない』ことを学びました。
