May 14, 2023: Coronation of King Charles, Het Loo Palace （チャールズ国王の戴冠式、ヘットロー宮殿）
On May 8, the coronation of King Charles took place in the UK. My wife and I watched it on BBC’s live-streaming video. While we are watching it, my wife began to tweet her memories of her living in the UK. Most of them were things that I had heard or experienced. But I had a thing that I had never heard. She suddenly tweeted that she had been to Buckingham Palace with her friends to tour the inside. But the tour was of a very limited space. So it was not what she expected.
I had also visited several palaces when I lived in Europe. Among them was Het Loo Palace which impressed me the most. It is a Dutch palace and is an hour's drive west of Amsterdam. It was partly because it was the first palace I toured in Europe that I was so impressed. But I had other reasons. It was fully open to visitors as it was no longer in use by the Dutch royals, but had become a museum of sorts. So we could see most of the rooms in the palace. It was not only the interior of the palace, but also its beautiful garden, that amazed me so much. It was French-style and strikingly beautiful.
5月8日に、英国のチャールズ国王の戴冠式が行われました。ボクは、妻と一緒にBBCの生配信でこれを見ていました。すると、妻が英国に住んでいた時の思い出をつぶやき始めました。その大半、聞いたことがあったり、体験したことがあったものだったのですが、聞いたことがないことが一つだけありました。バッキンガム宮殿の内部を見学にいったことがあると言うのです。彼女の友達といったそうです。でも、公開された場所が限られていたため、期待はずれだったそうです。
ボクも、欧州にいたころは、いくつかの宮殿を訪れました。一番印象に残っているのが、オランダのヘットロー宮殿です。首都のアムステルダムから西（ドイツ方面）に向かって、車を1時間ほど走らせたところにあります。この宮殿が、欧州に住み始めて最初の宮殿だったせいもあり、一番思い出深い宮殿です。宮殿は、その時すでに、オランダ王室の方々は私用しておらず、博物館として公開されていました。そのおかげで、宮殿の中の大半の部屋を見学できました。また、宮殿の内装だけでなく、美しい庭園にも驚かされました。フランス式の美しい庭園でした。フランス式のひときわ美しい庭園でした。
