I have heard that Kyoto is asking tourists not to carry their baggage as much as possible. It seems to bother the residents of Kyoto. In particular, on public buses. Large suitcases take up so much space that they prevent the residents from getting on the buses. The city seems to receive a lot of complaints about this.
I can understand how annoying it is for the residents. If I lived in Kyoto, I would be very annoyed with it and would have to have words with the tourists. About 5 or more years ago, I was in Kyoto and was faced with the same thing. I was on a public bus and saw a tourist asking the driver for something. But he had a hard time getting his points across to the driver, who did not understand the tourist’s language. And he needed some time to get the right answer from the driver. This must have annoyed both the tourist and the driver.
But it seems unreasonable to ask tourists not to carry their baggage. None of the tourists would understand the request, and even if they did, they would have no way to follow it. Or rather, it is the tourists who do not like to walk around with their heavy baggage. No tourist likes to carry heavy ones. So, the city has to find a way that satisfies both the tourists and the residents.
One of the ideas is to build a system similar to the one which has been in service in Switzerland for a long time. About 30 years ago, I went to Grindelwald in Switzerland for the summer holidays. I flew from Amsterdam to Zurich and took a train to Grindelwald. It took about five hours to get there. But I did not have to walk around with heavy baggage. I left it at Amsterdam Airport. Then, it was automatically delivered to my hotel in Grindelwald. I did not have to pick them up at Zurich Airport or Grindelwald railway station. It was a very efficient and comfortable service. I still remember well how great it was.
So, Kyoto should try to build a similar service, which allows the tourists to leave their baggage at Kyoto railway station and have it automatically delivered to their hotel on the same day. It should not be so hard to build the service as it has been in service in Switzerland for at least 30 years. Now, thanks to the development of IT technology, everything has become much more convenient. So, it is not as if Kyoto could not do it.

　京都市が観光客にできるだけ荷物を持たないように呼びかけています。これが京都市民を悩ませているようです。特に市バスの中で。大きなスーツケースは場所をとるので、住民がバスに乗れなくなるそうです。京都市はこのことで多くの苦情を受け取ているようです。
　住民にとって迷惑なのはよくわかります。もしボクが京都に住んでいたら、とても迷惑で、観光客と口論になりそうです。5年以上前、京都にいたとき、同じことに直面しました。市バスに乗っている時に、観光客が運転手さんに何かを頼んでいるのを見かけました。でも、運転手さんが、観光客の言葉を理解できないため、観光客は自分の言いたいことを運転手さんに伝えるのに苦労していました。結局、運転手さんから回答を得るのに、結構時間がかかりました。きっと、観光客と運転手の双方をイライラさせたと思います。
　でも、観光客に手荷物を持ってこないようにというのは無理があります。どの観光客も、これを理解できないでしょうし、仮に理解したとしても、そうする術がありません。というか、重い荷物を持って歩くのが嫌なのは観光客の方です。重い荷物を持ちたがる観光客はいません。従って、市は観光客と住民の両方を満足させる方法を見つけなければなりません。
そのアイデアのひとつが、スイスで長く使われているシステムの構築です。30年ほど前、夏休みにスイスのグリンデルワルドに行きました。アムステルダムからチューリッヒへ飛び、列車でグリンデルワルドへ向かいました。約5時間ほどかかりました。でも、重い荷物を持って歩き回る必要はなかったです。アムステルダムの空港で荷物をチェックインすると、グリンデルワルドのホテルに自動的に配達してくれたのです。チューリッヒの空港やグリンデルワルド駅で荷物を受け取る必要がなかったのです。とても効率的で快適なサービスでした。今でもその素晴らしさをよく覚えています。
　京都でも同じようなサービスを作るべきです。観光客が京都駅で荷物を預けると、その日のうちに自動的にホテルまで届けてくれるサービスです。スイスでは少なくとも30年以上使われているサービスなのですから、構築するのはそう難しくないはずです。IT技術の発達により、あらゆるものがより便利になりました。だから、京都でもできないわけがありません。
