September 28, 2024: English Dictionaries （英語の辞書）

It has been more than 3 years since I began to post English articles on the blog site ‘note. In the beginning, I had only posted Japanese ones. But it was so boring that I tried to find a way that would motivate me to do so. Then, I conceived of writing them in English. It interested me a lot, and it motivated me to keep going. At the same time, I made up my mind to continue to do it for at least 3 years. So, I am very happy to have achieved this goal.
Looking back on the three years, I got a lot of support in various ways. First of all, I have to be grateful for the bloggers in the ‘note’. I have got a lot of suggestions of topics from them. Without them, I would not be able to keep posting every day.
Secondly, I have to thank the Internet. It has given me a lot of information and made it easier for me to write articles in English. In particular, I have to thank the websites for dictionaries. I have used a lot of these sites from the beginning. In the beginning, I had only used Japanese-English and English-Japanese dictionaries. I have used the ‘Eijoro’, the Weblio’ and the ‘Dual Wisdom English Japanese Dictionary’. But the more I have written English articles, the fewer I have used them and the more I have come to use English-English dictionaries.
Now, I have two favourite English-English dictionaries. One is Cambridge’s English-English dictionary, which is very simple and easy to understand. The other is Longman’s Dictionaries, which have English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionaries as well as English-English one. In particular, the English-Japanese dictionary is the best of many of English-Japanese ones. It helps me me understand the meanings of English words more deeply because it has the information that I cannot get in the ones by the Japanese publishers.
In addition, I have another one that has been my lifeline for writing English articles. This is the Oxford Learner’s Theaurus. I bought it a long time ago. And the more I write English articles, the more I have found it invaluable. It has helped me a lot to understand the slight differences in similar words.
I do not know how long I can keep posting English articles on the blog website. But I hope to continue it with them as long as possible.
「note」に英語の記事を投稿するようになって、もう3年以上になります。最初の頃は日本語の記事だけだったのですが、あまりにつまらないので、モチベーションを上げる方法はないかと考えました。そこで思いついたのが、英語で記事を書くことでした。とても興味が湧いて、モチベーションも上がりました。同時に、少なくとも3年間は続けようと決心しました。なので、この目標を達成できて、とてもうれしいです。
この3年間を振り返ってみると、いろいろな面でサポートをいただきました。まず、「note」のブロガーのみなさんに、感謝しなければなりません。たくさんの記事のネタをいただきました。みなさんがいなければ、毎日投稿し続けることはできなかったと思います。
次に感謝するのが、インターネットです。インターネットのお陰で、多くの情報を得られ、英語で記事を書くことが容易になりました。特に、辞書のサイトに感謝です。書き始めた頃から、これらのサイトを利用してきました。最初の頃は、和英辞典と英和辞典しか使いませんでした。主に使っていたのが、「英辞郎」、「Weblio」、「Dual Wisdom英和辞典」です。でも、英語の記事を書くにつれて、それらを使う機会が減り、英英辞典を使うようになりました。
今、お気に入りの英英辞典が2つあります。ひとつはケンブリッジの英英辞典のサイトで、とてもシンプルでわかりやすいです。もう一つはロングマンの辞書サイトで、英英辞典の他に英和と和英辞典があります。特に英和辞典は数ある英和辞典の中でも最高です。日本の出版社のものでは得られない情報が載っており、英単語の意味をより深く理解できます。
さらに、英文記事を書く際のボクの命綱になっている辞書がもう一つあります。「オックスフォード英語類語辞典」です。ずいぶん前に買ったのですが、英文記事を書けば書くほど、この辞書のありがたみがわかってきます。似たような単語のちょっとした違いを理解するのに非常に役立っています。
いつまでブログサイトに英語記事を掲載し続けられるかはわかりません。でも、これらの辞書と共に、できるだけ長く続けたいと思っています。
