October 11 , 2023: India, Separators in Numbers, Global Standard （インド、数字の区切り、世界標準）
I often visit a number of websites in India to see the car sales in the country. However, the websites are hard for me to read. This is because they separate the numbers in a different way than what I am used to. In Japan, for the numbers that are greater than a thousand, we put commas after every third digit from the right: a million is written as 1,000,000. But in India, for the numbers, we first put a comma after the third digit from the right, but then, we put commas after every two digits: a million is written numerically as 10,00,000. This is very confusing to me and I often misunderstand the numbers on the websites. When I see 10,00,000 on an Indian website, I tend to misunderstand it as ten million. I hope that they will change it one day, but I know it will never happen.
I have understood that maths is typical of a global standard and people all over the world can learn it in the same manner. In fact, I am now studying maths with a textbook for British students, but I see nothing strange with it. It just reminds me of what I learned in Japanese schools. Nevertheless, maths have differences in small matters, such as the use of commas in numbers in India. It is true for the use of commas and periods in numbers. In Japan, we use commas to separate numbers and periods for a decimal point. But in the Netherlands, they are used the other way round. Commas are used for decimal points and periods are used to separate numbers. This means that local practices are deeply rooted in each area and take precedence over global standards. To be exact, nothing may be globally standardized.
時々、インドのサイトにアクセスしています。インドの自動車販売台数を知るためです。でも、サイトが読みにくいのです。理由は、サイトにある数字の区切り方が、ボクが慣れているものと違うからです。日本では、千以上の数字には、右から３桁ごとにカンマを入れます。例えば、百万だと,1,000,000になります。ところが、インドは違います。最初のカンマは、日本のように、右から3桁の後に入れるのですが、その後は2桁ごとにカンマをいれます。つまり、百万だと、10,00,000となります。これが非常に紛らわしく、いつも、見間違います。インドのサイトで百万を見ると、千万と勘違いしてしまいます。いつか、変更されることを願っていますが、変わらないことも分かっています。
数学が世界標準の最たるもので、世界中で、同じやり方で学べるものと思っていました。実際に、ボクは、今、英国の数学の教科書を勉強していますが、違和感はありません。日本で学んだことを思い出しながら勉強しています。でも、インドのカンマなどの些細な部分では違いがあります。同じことは、カンマとピリオドにも言えます。日本では、桁の区切りにカンマを使い、小数点にピリオドを使います。でも、オランダでは正反対です。オランダでは、桁の区切りにピリオドを使い、少数点にカンマを使います。各地には、現地に深く根付いた慣習があり、それらが世界標準より優先されています。厳密にいうと、世界標準なんてないのかもしれません。
