May 11, 2024: With Retired Number （永久欠番の私）
‘Retired Number'. It is the title of a song by the Japanese singer, Miyuki Nakajima. As the song says, I agree that humans are small things in a society. None care about it, whether they die or not. Everything goes on as usual as if nothing special happened.
So, some may go with the flow and live their lives as it is. But I cannot go with the flow and cannot help but do something with my will. As the French philosopher Pascal says, I am a thinking reed, not a robot. So I always try to think hard about anything and act based on the decision. Otherwise, I cannot satisfy the other me in my heart. If I only go with the tide, I would only be blamed and told how foolish I am. So, I am terrified to go with the flow. Regardless, I know that most of my life cannot fight, and is following, the tide. All the more, I would like to try to secure the time to think about my life as much as possible. I want to talk about it as much as possible with the other me, to satisfy ourselves. Then, just before the end of my life, I would be able to satisfy myself that I have done my best to live my life as much as possible. And I, who have the retired number in the universe, will be twinkling like a shining star in the night.
I do not know how long I can enjoy the rest of my life. It may be very long or short. In any case, I will continue to do my best for my daily life, which is the only way to satisfy myself.
「永久欠番」。歌手・中島みゆきさんの歌のタイトルです。この歌にあるように、人間は社会の中ではちっぽけなものだと思います。死のうが死ぬまいが、誰も気にかけてません。何事もなかったかのように、すべてがいつも通りに進んでいきます。
だから、流れに身を任せてありのままに生きる人もいるでしょう。でも、ボクは流れに身を任せることができません。自分の意志で何かをせずにはいられないのです。フランスの哲学者・パスカルが言うように、ボクは「考える葦」であってロボットではありません。だから、どんなことでも常に一生懸命考え、その判断に基づいて行動するようにしていま。そうでなければ、ボクの心の中にいるもう一人の自分を満足させることはできません。流れに任せるだけでは、非難され、「馬鹿か」と言われるだけです。だから、流れに身を任せるなんてできません。とはいえ、自分の人生の大半は流れに逆らうことができず、それに身を任せていることも分かっています。だからこそ、できるだけ自分の人生について考える時間を確保したいです。もう一人の自分と、できるだけ話し合って納得したいです。そうすれば、人生の終わりを迎える直前になって、自分が精一杯生きたと満足できるでしょう。そして、永久欠番がある宇宙（そら）にいるボクは、夜空に輝く星のようにキラキラしていることでしょう。
残りの人生をいつまで楽しめるかはわかりません。とても長いかもしれないし、短いかもしれません。いずれにしても、日々の生活に全力を尽くします。それしか自分を満足させる方法がないので。
