August 27, 2023: Supermarket, New Self-Checkout Service （スーパーマーケット、新しいセルフの精算サービス）
The other day I was in the supermarket, 'Kasumi', with my wife. It was a big surprise for me. It was a long time, and probably a year, since I had been there with her. As soon as I walked into it, I found a big change in the supermarket, and they have already started a new self-checkout service, Scan & Go. And my wife was one of the users of the service. She picked up a trolley, and at the same time, she opened up an app on her smartphone. Then, she began shopping. Every time she picked up an item and put it in the trolley, she scanned it with her smartphone. Then, the price appeared on the phone, and she pressed the OK button. After that, she repeated that every time she put an item in the trolley. When she had picked and scanned all the items she needed, she pressed a checkout button. Then, the total amount of her purchases appeared on the phone and then, she pressed the OK button to pay. That was the end of her shopping trip. She had to do nothing else. She could walk out of the store after a quick check by a shop assistant. I was amazed to see how easy shopping has become. We no longer have to wait in long queues. Nor do we have to transfer our purchases from a trolley to our shopping bag, as long as we place our bag on the trolley before we start shopping. The system gives a lot of benefits to the store, too. Cashiers are no longer needed. The best of both worlds.
先日、妻と一緒にスーパーの「カスミ」に買い物にいきました。妻とカスミに行くのは久しぶりで、たぶん、1年ぶりだと思います。店内に入ると、大きく変わっていました。「スキャン＆ゴー」というセルフの精算サービスが導入されていたのです。妻も、このサービスを使っていました。妻はショッピングカートを取り出ました。また、同時に自身のスマホでアプリを立ち上げ、買い物を開始しました。商品を棚から取り出し、カートに入れるたび、スマホでスキャンします。そうすると、スマホに代金が表示さるので、オーケーボタンを押します。その後も、商品をカートに入れるたびに、スキャンとボタンを押すことを繰り返します。必要な商品をすべて取り出し、スキャンし終えると、精算ボタンを押します。そうすると支払金額が表紙されるので、支払いボタンを押します。これで買い物は完了です。他にすることはありません。店員さんの簡単なチェックを受けると、店を出ることができました。買い物がこんなに簡単になっていてびっくりです。もはや、長い列に並ぶ必要はありません。また、買った商品をカートから自分の袋に移し替える必要もありません。買い物かごに、自分の袋を広げて、その中に買い物をしたものを入れるからです。この仕組みは店にもたくさんメリットがあります。レジ係も必要なくなります。いいことづくめです。
