#034『彼もまた鳥たちと同じように家族を持ち、子どもたちのために住処をつくるのだった』｜ベッシー・ヘッドの言葉｜Short Story
The small hill was a few hundred yards away from the village. A few tall trees dotted the hillside. In the early morning summer light the birds in the trees continued their mating and preparation of their homes for their youngones.There was a constant rustle of activity as they mated lightlyand dizzily on thin strips of branches, fluffed out their feathers or spunin somersaults as they wove nests out of long strands of fresh grass. Now and then they took time off from their labours and rested wide-eyed and absent-minded on the branches. Or suddenly, they would sing. They were undisturbed by the presence of a silent man seated beneath one of the tall trees. He was somewhat like them, a family man who had mated and prepared his home for his young ones.
A long night of brooding reflection had passed for the silent man. He was disturbed by the pain of one who had been dispossessed and for many hours he sat and looked down at the land and the huts, its life towards him. He was an outcast, alone with his pain. Eventually, uncertainly, unsteadily, he arose to his feet and from the bark of the trees, he made a long twine.
その小高い丘は、村から数百ヤード離れたところにあった。丘の中腹には背の高い木が数本点々と立っていた。夏の早朝の光のなか、木々の鳥たちは交尾を続け子鳥たちのために住処の準備をしていた。細い枝の上で軽い交尾をしたり、羽毛を広げたり、新鮮な草の長い繊維で巣を編むように宙返りをしたりと、絶えずにぎやかだった。時折、鳥たちは労働から離れ、枝の上で目を見開いてぼんやりと休んでいた。あるいは突然、歌うのだ。彼らは、背の高い木の下に座っている無口な男の存在に気を取られることはなかった。彼もまた、鳥たちと同じように家族を持ち、子どもたちのために住処を用意するのだった。物言わぬ男にとって、沈思黙考の長い夜が過ぎた。何かを奪われた人間の悲しみに心をかき乱され、何時間も座って土地とハット（小屋）と、その奪われた生活が彼に向かっているのを見つめていた。追放され、ただひとり苦しみとともにいた。やがて、不確かで不安定な足取りで立ち上がると、木の皮で長い麻ひもを作った。
この短編では、傲慢な伝統的首長による村人たちへの搾取の歴史が、小さな物語で描かれている。短い中に込められたメッセージは色濃く展開は衝撃的だ。
引用部分は冒頭の一節だが、美しい情景のなか、この男は首を吊るために麻ひもを組んでいる。その理由は、悪行の限りを尽くした首長により、何もかもを奪われてしまったからだ。しかし、この後、首長に反旗を翻すために立ち上がった者たちがいたが……皮肉な展開となる。
これだけの短い作品の中に、昔から存在する権力の支配と民主主義の兆しについて的確かつ鋭く描くベッシーの才能は恐ろしいものがある。この物語もまた、心に深く染みついてしまい離れなくなる強烈なインパクトがある。
ベッシー作品の特徴は、例えば起承転結のようなわかりやすい物語の展開がないのに、何故か忘れられなくなるということだ。
そして、美しい表現がふんだんに盛り込まれている。いつか全訳してご紹介したい。
