【English subtitle/英語サブタイトル】

I watched an English movie called "Eat, Pray, Love" on Netflix and was puzzled when I put on the English subtitle, which came out 2-3 seconds after said it. I was once advised from a teacher in Wakashachi English conversation circle that to learn English at the movies, try watching it without subtitles aat first, then with subtitles, and finally with subtitles in your native language. The advice is that if you do without any subtitles at the beginning, it is better for your brain to associate the movements with the statements and try to interpret them.

In reality, however, except for some movie, I don’t want to watch more than once, and if there are statements that I don't understand even the first time, I end up putting on subtitles on the movie.

So I thought that subtitles that came out a little late would be a good idea, because the idea that I could watch the movie without subtitles the first time and with subtitles the second time can be achieved all at the same time. By the way, it turned out that the English subtitles came out late was just English subtitle in Netflix and the one that came out immediately was called "English SDH (Subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing)".

I later realized that if the subtitles came out late, I would still be confused when I was reading them and then the statements would come out. Later, when I tried the English SDH subtitle, I still felt better and easier to understand when the image and the subtitle matched at the same time.

I am always curious about the interpretation of the story in the middle of the film, anyway I put the subtitles on later, and it was troublesome to turn them off and back on again, so I thought it would be more realistic to watch scenes ignoring subtitles and rewind and rewatch them with subtitles when I felt it was important.

Thus, regardless of your English level, the more opportunities you have to come into contact with English, the more you will discover and improve, and I believe that one of the great pleasures in life is to feel even a slight improvement. Therefore, I believe that the Wakashachi-kai English conversation circle is a very valuable and good place to help us in this regard, where we can interact with our friends in an at-home atmosphere that is a little bit Western, but without Japanese ties.

Netflixで「食べて、祈って、恋をして」という英語の映画を見て、英語の字幕のサブタイトルをつけたら、発言から2-3秒後に出てきて困惑していた。映画での英語の勉強は、まず字幕も何もなしで見てみて、次にサブタイトルをつけて、最後に母国語のサブタイトルで見るのがいいと、所属している若鯱会の英会話サークルの先生からアドバイスされたことがある。はじめに何もサブタイトルなしにすると、脳が動きと発言を連想させて解釈しようとするのがいいのだとか。

しかし、実際には、ものすごく気に入った映画しか2回以上見たいとは思わず、1回目でもわからない発言があったら、字幕をつけてしまうというのがオチである。

それで、少し遅れて出てくるサブタイトルはそれはそれでその1回目の字幕なしと2回目の字幕ありの両方をいっぺんにできて、逆に良いのではないかと思っていた。そこで、英語の字幕は遅れて出てきて、すぐに出てくるものは「英語SDH(Subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing)」というものだったことが判明した。

遅れて字幕が出てくると、それを読んでいる時に発言が出てきて、やっぱり混乱してしまうということも後で気づいた。その後、英語SDHのサブタイトルにしてみて、やっぱり映像と字幕が同時に合致する方が気分がよく、分かりやすかった。

どうしても、途中で話の解釈が気になり、字幕を後でつけてしまい、字幕を消したりつけたりするのは面倒なので、Realityとして、字幕をつけながら、わからない時だけ、重要と思った時だけ、字幕を見たり、巻き戻したりして見返すというのが現実的ではないかと思ったのであった。

そんなこんなで、英語のレベルに関係なく、英語に触れる機会が多ければ多いほど発見や上達があり、ちょっとでも上達を感じられることが人生の大きな楽しみの一つだと信じる。よって、そんなことを手助けしてくれる、ちょっと欧米的で、日本的なしがらみのないAt homeな雰囲気で仲間とも交流ができる若鯱会の英会話サークルはとても貴重でいい場所だと考えている。
