SIM residency July-2

Thank you so much for giving me a chance to talk.
My name is AKIRA.
I’m a painter.
And I recommend this anime movie.
/////////////////////
First, I talk about my country Japan.*

Japan is on the eastern side of the continent and very long vertically.*

There are four seasons, rich nature and various cultures*
On the other hand, Japan is extremely disaster-prone(ディズアスタープローン) and is constantly exposed to threats(スゥレッツ) such as earthquakes and typhoons. *
/////////////////////
For example, it is estimated that about 20,000 people died in the Great East Japan Earthquake 11 years ago, *and more than 300,000 (hundred thousand)people will die in the Nankai Great Earthquake, which is said to occur surely in the early future.

However, it is not uncommon for people to continue living in areas where it is known that an earthquake will occur in the future. My sister is one of them.
/////////////////////
Perhaps foreigners might have a hard to understand them.
Japanese people have an attitude of accepting what we receive from the environment.

I think this natural threat has a strong influence on the fundamental part of Japanese thought and religious(レリジェス) spirit.
/////////////////////

*Do you know these movies?(Spirited away)

There are a lot of KAMI in these movies.*
I think they help to understand KAMI that Japanese worship. In Japan, everything has possibility recognized as KAMI. *
It is called Shinto and is very similar to animism.

*Most Japanese are Shintoist. The emperor of Japan, Tenno, is a Shinto priest, and they have held a lot of ceremonies for the people for generations during about 2400 years.
*However, many Japanese are not very interested in their religion and probably don't realize what they believe in.

*Most Japanese enjoy Shinto festivals every year, *pledge their love to pastors at church when they get married, *and hold Buddhist ceremony when someone die.

Japanese view of religion seems incoherent(インコヒーレンツ),
but when I understood the structure of Shinto, I understood of the Japanese people who straddle many religions as same time.
/////////////////////
*I think that Christianity(クリシチアーナティ), Buddhism and other religion having doctrine are like book.

On the other hand, Japanese Shinto has no doctrine and a structure like a vessel that accepts many things. many Japanese have religion base of Shinto and it make possible to recognize of other religions. *

I think the root of art is religion. And recent years I'm trying to incorporate Shinto's vessel-like thought structure into my work.

*Next, I talk about my works.
This is my painting. (melting painting*画像、人なしの方)

I put an ice cream bar on acrylic canvas.
*It was melting during the exhibition , And the image on canvas was changing(画像、人ありの方)
/////////////////////
I have liked painting since I was a child. but I'm not good at painting.
*I studied in the department intended to train successors of Gutai.
*何枚か写真を見せる

Many replays and lectures of Gutai were held in the class, And I was strongly influenced by GUTAI
.*
At the beginning of my working, I thought about how to draw like members of GUTAI.
*This is my work when I was a student.
101 toy dogs were walking and painting on canvas.
////////////////////////
*This work visualizes high-speed bouncy balls as painting stroke .
This one is same concept with previous work.
People were able to enter this work with a shield.
////////////////////////
My interest in painting gradually shifted from the surface of canvas to material structures and conceptual structures.
////////////////////////

By arranging the wood, the canvas was reconstructed in a form fused with the architecture.

////////////////////////
This is also my work, but the paintings on the wall are not mine.
I ordered a painting rental company to lay out and select the paintings to be displayed on one wall.
The viewer needed a different perspective from the conventional viewing method
because this wall including other’s paintings was presented as my work.
////////////////////////

In recent years, I have been interested in the factors and thoughts that make up paintings.

Japan imported art about 150 years ago.
I feel that Japanese art has repeated importing foreign art like a graft since then.

I’m thinking of a fusion of painting and Japanese indigenous(インディジネス) thought Shinto.
But I still don't know if it's possible or what it has form.
Perhaps no Japanese artist has ever tried to make such a work.

I have been researching the religious nature of Japan for the past few years, but it is difficult to look it objectively due to the nature of Shinto when I’m in Japan.
Because Shinto is integrated into the lives of Japanese people.

Iceland has many geographical similarities to Japan, such as the fact that it is an island (アイランド)country with volcanoes and that it is a fishing country.
When comparing the two countries, I thought that the characteristics of Japanese thought could be well understood.

And, during this three-month stay, I'm going to experience nature and religious view while comparing Iceland and Japan.
/////////////////////

Specifically, this month's my work is a plan to put a Torii gate and record photos.
Torii is a symbol of a shrine and can be found everywhere in Japan.

By putting the torii, natural objects such as mountains, rivers, and waterfalls are recognized as KAMI, and the inside and outside of the shrine are occur.
It also acts like a frame in a painting, transforming it into a special place when put Torii gate.
/////////////////////
The color and material of the torii are not fixed, and there are various colors and shapes, and this time I’m thinking of blue to match the landscape of Iceland.

I don't know if this work fits or doesn't fit Icelandic land.
But no matter what the result, I want to more consciously incorporate Japanese thought into my work through this stay.
