ホアキン・フェニックスが吹き替えなしの歌を披露し主演するカントリー・ミュージック歌手Johnny Cashの伝記映画「ウォーク・ザ・ライン　君へと続く道」より。原題の'Walk the Line'は、Johnny Cashのヒット曲'I Walk the Line'から取られている。

1955年テネシー州Memphis（メンフィス）。Johnny Cashは既に一児のパパ。軍を除隊後、家庭用品のセールスマンとして訪問販売をするが、うまくいかない。ベーシストと電気ギターを弾く二人の友人とバンドを結成して、歌の練習をしていたが、ある日、レコーディング・スタジオを見かけ、オーディションを受けさせてくれと頼む。かのエルヴィス・プレスリー（1954年デビュー）を最初に売り出したロックン・ロールの震源地：サン・レコードだ。

オーディションでJohnny Cashたちは、ゴスペル・ソングを歌って聞かせる。スタジオ社長にしてプロデューサーのSam Phillips（演：ダラス・ロバーツ）は「そういう曲は売れない。売れないものをレコードにしても仕方がない」と告げる。
「このままでは帰れない」と食い下がるJohnny Cashに、Phillipsが告げる言葉より。

Sam Phillips: Bring... bring it home? All right, let's bring it home. If you was hit by a truck and you was lying out there in that gutter dying, and you had time to sing *one* song. Huh? One song that people would remember before you're dirt. One song that would let God know how you felt about your time here on Earth. One song that would sum you up. You tellin' me that's the song you'd sing? That same Jimmy Davis tune we hear on the radio all day, about your peace within, and how it's real, and how you're gonna shout it? Or... would you sing somethin' different. Somethin' real. Somethin' *you* felt. Cause I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain't got nothin to do with believin' in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin' in yourself.

Johnny Cashは空軍時代に作ったフォルサム刑務所の囚人の気持を歌った曲を演奏する。　曲は”Folsom Prison Blues”。

その内容に感じ入ったSam Phillipsは、その曲をレコードにする。
全ての始まりだった。
ここからJohnny Cashの栄光、ロマンス、薬物中毒、転落、カムバックのドラマが丹念に描かれる。日本での知名度が薄いシンガーなので、人にとっては退屈に感じられるかもしれない。

それでも、
ホアキン・フェニックスが父親から愛されない切なさ、最初の妻から理解されないやるせなさ、後に第二の妻となる人を愛し一直線に突き進む素直さ、切れると暴れまくる荒々しさなど、さまざまな感情表現を幅広くこなしていて、彼の演技だけで十分お釣りのくる、力作だ。
