CNN｜米国と新型肺炎

毎朝CNNを聴くことを日課にしています。今回は、ニュースより、新型肺炎と関連する語彙・表現を紹介します。ネガティブな出来事も学習材料に変えてみます。対象とするニュースはこちら↓

少し前の記事ですが、興味深い語彙・表現が多かったので、選んでみました。

Transcriptより気になった表現を抜き出して、英英辞典で意味を確認します。単語自体は難しくないものが多いですが、Transcriptを読むと、このような文脈で使うのか！という学びがあります。また、英英辞典を引くことで、意味だけでなく、どのように言い換えができるか、同時に学ぶことができ、語彙力を増やせます。

今回は、Transcriptより7つの文章を選んでみました。意訳を含み、逐語訳になっていませんが、悪しからず…

Key Sentence 01

Most of the infections and deaths have been in China and while health officials have said this virus is not as widespread or deadly as the flu, there are concerns that it may start to spread seasonally like influenza does.

infection: a disease that is caused by bacteria or viruses
widespread: affecting or including a lot of places, people, etc.
deadly: causing death
spread: to affect a larger number of people
seasonally: relating to the particular season of the year

感染はインフルエンザほど、広まらないし、致死力もないが、季節性をもって拡散するおそれがある、といった感じですね。知っていても、咄嗟に出てこない表現ではないでしょうか。

Key Sentence 02

Symptoms of survivors range from severe to mild. There's no vaccine or cure for it so people around the world are asking what government and health officials are doing to prevent its spread.

symptom: any feeling of illness or physical or mental change that is caused by a particular disease
severe: causing very great pain, difficulty, worry, damage, etc.; very serious
mild: not violent, severe, or extreme
vaccine: a substance containing a virus or bacterium in a form that is not harmful, given to a person or animal to prevent them from getting the disease that the virus or bacterium causes
cure:to make someone with an illness healthy again

生存者の症状は、重症から軽症まで。ワクチンや治療法がないことから、人々は政府や保健機関に対して、どのような拡大予防措置をとっているか説明を求めている、という感じ。症状は、severeとmildを使うんですね。

Key Sentence 03

This virus is probably with us beyond this season or beyond this year and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community based transmission. And you can start to think of it in a sense like seasonal flu and the only difference is we don't understand this virus.

beyond: outside or after (a stated limit)
foothold: a strong first position from which further progress can be made
transmission: the process of passing something from one person or place to another
sense: a general feeling or understanding

季節／今年を超えて、ウイルスは定着するだろう。結局のところ、ウイルスは定着の起点を見つけてしまい、コミュニティ内で伝染が起こるだろう。ある意味、季節性インフルエンザのように捉えられていく。唯一の違いは、このウイルスについて理解していないことだ。footholdは比喩的に使われていますね。伝染は、transmissionというんですね。

Key Sentence 04

Yesterday the Trump Administration requested that $2.5 billion be set aside to pay for America's response to the disease. That would include vaccine development, preparing medical offices for patients and closely tracking where and when coronavirus shows up.

set-aside: an amount of money kept for a special purpose
response: an answer or reaction
track: to follow a person or animal by looking for proof that they have been somewhere, or by using electronic equipment
shows up: to appear or be seen

トランプ政権は、感染症対策として、25億ドルの予算確保を指示した。ワクチンの開発、患者用の医療拠点の確保、コロナウイルスがいつどこで発生したかのトラッキングなどの用途が含まれる。これも難しい語彙はありませんが、パッと浮かびませんね。

Key Sentence 05

We have in quarantined those infected and those at risk. We have a lot of great quarantine facilities. We're rapidly developing a vaccine and they can speak to you, the professionals can speak to you about that.

quarantine: a period of time during which an animal or person that might have a disease is kept away from other people or animals so that the disease cannot spread

感染者、感染のおそれがある者には、隔離期間を設定している。充実した隔離施設がたくさんある。現在ワクチンを迅速に開発しており、専門家から発表があるだろう。quarantineは専門用語ですね。隔離を簡単に言い換えるとkeep away from。

Key Sentence 06

An epidemic is simply an outbreak of infection in a localized area. A pandemic is when that infection spreads to multiple countries around the world.

epidemic: the appearance of a particular disease in a large number of people at the same time
outbreak: a time when something suddenly begins, especially a disease or something else dangerous or unpleasant
localize: to limit something to a particular area
pandemic: (of a disease) existing in almost all of an area or in almost all of a group of people, animals, or plants
multiple: very many of the same type, or of different types

epidemicは局所的な範囲での感染の発生を、pandemicは世界中複数の国での感染の拡大を指す。これも専門用語ですね。WHOはまだpandemicではない、と3月5日時点では言っていましたが、今後どうなるでしょうか。

Key Sentence 07

And when that happens, sometimes the virus is not very transmittable because it's suited to circulated only to animals. But sometimes we see ones that can transmit from person to person and they can be quite efficient at doing this and in that case an outbreak can become an epidemic as it grows. And there's a challenge that it could spread more widely.

transmittable: able to be passed or sent from one person, thing, or place to another
suit: to be right for a particular person, situation, or occasion
circulate: to go around or through something, or to make something go around or through something
efficient: working or operating quickly and effectively in an organized way

動物を介した伝染となっていて、伝播性はあまりないが、人同士の伝染に適したウイルスが見つかることがあり、そうなると、epidemicを招いてしまう。より拡散すると試練だ。ここでもtransmitがよく使われます。覚えておいた方が良い表現ですね。

英語ニュースのListening、TranscriptのReading、英英辞典によるVocabulary強化をまとめてやってしまえば、効率的に勉強ができると思います。日本だけでなく海外でどのような報道がされているか、目を向けてみても良いかもしれません。

P.S. 肺炎は、pneumoniaといいます。英英辞典では、a serious illness in which one or both lungs become red and swollen and filled with liquidとあります。これも専門用語ですが、最近のニュースではよく聴くようになってしまいました。
