お題 Are prisons an effective way to maintain our society?

There are some divisions among experts over the extent to which incarceration contributes to the prosperity of our society. In my opinion, it cannot be said that the system of prisons plays a pivotal role in keeping our society in a better fashion.

One thing that comes into my mind is that general citizens shoulder the financial burden on maintaining prisons. For instance, in some countries like the US, prisons are state-funded, which means the people are obliged to make a financial contribution to care for prisoners. Furthermore, the fact that prisoners' jobs within prisons serve as little compensation for taxes paid by taxpayers shows grim pictures in which innocent people unfairly bear the brunt of financial difficulties. This plunges people in the US into financial dire straits, thus compromising the quality of their lives.

Another major contributing factor for my stance is that prisons have the potential to exacerbate our ongoing society, possibly resulting in vicious cycle of heinous crimes.
There are some criminals with little compunction about past mistakes. Tragically, they are obsessed with the idea of how they escape from jails. If they success in invading society with little remorse towards their past misconduct, our halcyon days are poisoned by atrocious crimes potentially caused by them.

Racial discrimination is another importance we should attach in terms of contemplating the effectiveness of prisons. It is often pointed out that racial minorities like black people have a tendency to be incarcerated even if they commit petty crimes. Unless this racial intolerance is eliminated when it comes to public justice, the systems of incarceration can be politicized in favor of white nationalism. Therefore, the availability of prisons will gradually lose their importance in the betterment of our society without any judicious strategies.

In summary, I disagree the stance that prisons exert  beneficial impacts on our society for three reasons mentioned above.
