Swan baby

ロンドンの水路には白鳥が住んでいます。この季節には雛をつれたやつをよくみますが、白鳥の赤ちゃんは英語で「シグネッツ」と言います。

近所の運河に住んでいる家族は例年５羽前後の雛を引き連れているので、それくらいいるのが普通なのかなと思っていたのですが、今年ハイド・パークで見かけた二組の家族は、どちらも雛は１羽だけでした。

犬にやられちゃったのか、今年の春は寒すぎて、小さな雛には厳しかったのか。昨日なんか、突然の夕立のあと気温8度まで冷え込んでびっくりしたもんね。

大きな親鳥に見守られているふかふかの雛は、安心し切っています。白鳥って気が強いんだけど、私はこの鳥の子育てを眺めるのが好きです。

ところで、ちょっと足や首が長くなり大人に近づいてきた幼鳥を、娘は「Teenagerティーンエイジャー！」と言います。下の写真はティーンエイジャーたちを引き連れたカナディアングースの家族。確かに、もうベビーじゃないね。

In London waterways, we can see many swans in this season of the year. Their chicks are called "Cygnets" in here.

Living near the Little Venice canal, I see swan families with five to seven cygnets yearly. However, last Sunday, I met two pairs in Hyde Park with a single cygnet.

It's a harsh reality that not all cygnets make it. Some may fall victim to the aggression of dogs, while others, too small to withstand the chill of late spring, may not survive. Just yesterday, the temperature plummeted to 8°C after an unexpected downpour.

Anyway, I love watching downy little cygnets feel safe and protected by their big, strong, and impressive parents.

Besides, My daughter calls those baby birds which have longer legs and necks "Teenagers". Don't you think that's fitting? The picture below isn't of swans but a family of Canadian geese with their teenagers.
