リベカのアドベント　-１９日目-

　明日から学校はクリスマス休暇に入ります。仲直りをしたリベカとアンニカは、きょうはお泊まり会です。リベカがアンニカの家へ泊まりに行きました。アンニカの家ではアンニカの両親があたたかく迎えてくれましたが、おばあさんは姿を見せませんでした。アンニカの猫、ヴィクトリアはおすまししていましたが、しばらくするとリベカの足になついてきました。
　ディナーはシチュー。外ではゆっくりと雪が降っています。
　ごはんの後ふたりはアンニカの部屋へ行きます。
「……チャドったらおもしろいの。目をこんな風に寄せてね、マリヤ先生がびっくりした時の顔をまねるのよ」
「カールはね……」
　女の子ふたりのおしゃべりはいつまでも止まりそうにありません。
「ワン君がね……」
　いつまでもやみそうにないおしゃべりがほんの一瞬途切れた時にドアの方でぱたり、と音がしました。
「誰か来た？」
　ドアの下の所には真っ白い封筒が落ちていました。
「何かしら。？　リベカ様へって書いてある」
「私？」
　リベカは早速封筒を開けてみました。そこにはびっしりと几帳面そうな文字が並んでいました。リベカは休まずに一気に読み切りました。そして立ち上がってドアを開けて、大きな声で叫びました。
「アンニカのおばあちゃん！　ありがと！　リベカは大丈夫！　またね！」
　そしてにっこりと笑ってポンポンとアンニカの頭をなでました。

「そうそう、私、不思議な夢を見たよ」
　ふたりはパジャマに着替えてベッドの中でひそひそ話。
「どんな？」
「おしゃべりなフクロウが飛んできて、こう言うの。あなたの願いは聞かれましたって。私ね、クリスマスプレゼントはいらないから、リベカと仲直りがしたいって祈ったの、ほんとうよ」
　リベカは、ガブリエルだ！　と思いましたが、秘密を守らなくてはなりません。
「ありがとう」
　リベカはそれだけ、答えました。
「でもね、リベカから素敵なプレゼントもらっちゃった。食べたらどんな味がするんでしょうね、このキャンディー」
「角砂糖だよ」
「そうなの？！」
「……たぶん」
　リベカはてっきり角砂糖だとばかり思っていましたが、たしかにキャンディーに見えなくもありません。
「でもなんだかチョコレートにも見えてきた。でもチョコならすぐにとけてしまうはずね」
「食べてみる？」
「うーん」
　アンニカがはにかむようなむずかしい笑顔を見せました。
「食べてみよう！」
　リベカはベッドから飛び起きて、アンニカのペンケースからカッターを取り出しました。
「はんぶんこでいいかな？」
　うん、とアンニカはうなずきました。
　紫色の小さな四角い物体にリベカはカッターの刃をたてました。サクッと思いのほか簡単に、スムーズに切れていきます。
　トン、と机に刃が届いた瞬間、そこから七色の光があふれ出して部屋中に広がります！
　それはまるでオーロラのように神秘的でした。
　そして、それはやがて天井近くのひとつの所へ集まって、とても強く光りはじめました。

　ふたりは幻を見ました。

Yesterday was the last day of school before Christmas break. Rebecca and Annika are having a sleepover at Annika’s house. Annika’s mother and father greeted Rebecca warmly, but grandma was nowhere to be found. Annika’s cat, Victoria, was acting haughty at first but after a while began to rub itself against Rebecca’s legs.
Dinner was stew. It was gently snowing outside.
After dinner, the two went up to Annika’s room.
“… Chad is so silly. He crosses his eyes like this and mimics the face of Ms. Maria when she’s surprised.”
“Carl is…”
It seems as though the girls’ chit chat will never end.
“Wan is…”
When the endless chit chat stopped for just a while, the two heard the sound of the door shutting.
“Is somebody there?”
At the foot of the door was a white envelope.
“What’s this? It says ‘To Rebecca’.”
“Me?”
Rebecca immediately opened the envelope. Inside was a letter written with clean handwriting. Rebecca read the whole thing without stopping. Then, she stood up and shouted out the door,
“Thank you Annika’s grandma! I’m alright now!”
Rebecca patted Annika’s head with a smile.

“Oh yea, I had a strange dream”
The two were in their pajamas and were whispering in bed.
“What kind?”
“A talking owl came flying my way, and told me that my wish had been heard. I had just prayed that all I wanted for Christmas was to be friends with you again, it’s true.”
Rebecca knew that it must have been Gabriel, but made sure to keep her promise of not telling anyone.
“Thank you.”
That was all that Rebecca said.
“But then I got a wonderful present from you. I wonder what this candy tastes like?”
“It’s a sugar cube.”
“Really?”
“I think so…”
Rebecca had thought that it was a sugar cube, but now it’s starting to look like it could also be candy.
“It’s starting to seem like it could even be chocolate. But if it was, it would have melted by now.”
“Should we eat it?”
“Hmmmm…”
Annika flashed a shy smile.
“Let’s eat it!”
Rebecca jumped out of bed and took out a cutter from Annika’s pencil case.
“Half each?”
Annika nodded.
With the cutter in hand, Rebecca cut the small purple cube in half. It cut much smoother than she expected.
As the blade hit the table with a little thump, bright colors poured out of the center and spread all throughout the room! It was mysterious and beautiful like an aurora (though the two had not yet seen one). The colors gathered towards a spot near the ceiling and began to shine very brightly. 

The two saw a vision.
