【英訳】侏儒の言葉23: 恋は死よりも強し

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Love Is Mightier than Death

‘Love is mightier than death’, wrote Maupassant in one of his novels. Love is not, though, everything in the world that is mightier than death. Imagine a patient suffering from typhus, for example, eats a biscuit and dies a predictable death. This shows that appetite, too, is one thing that is mightier than death. Putting aside appetite, we can count lots of these: patriotism, religious conversion, humanitarianism, greed, reputation, criminal instinct, and more ― there must be still many more that are mightier than death. That is to say, every passion for something would be mightier than death. (Naturally, passion for death itself is an exception.) And we might be called careless if we asserted that love is, among things as such, particularly stronger than death. Even when it appears to be mightier than death, we are, in fact, often controlled by something that Frenchmen call Bovarism. It is a form of sentimentalisme, where we fancy ourselves to be lovers in romance novels. 

恋は死よりも強し
「恋は死よりも強し」というのはモオパスサンの小説にもある言葉である。が、死よりも強いものはもちろん天下に恋ばかりではない。たとえば、チブスの患者などのビスケットを一つ食ったために知れ切った往生を遂げたりするのは食欲も死よりは強い証拠である。食欲のほかにも数えあげれば、愛国心とか、宗教的感激とか、人道的精神とか、利欲とか、名誉心とか、犯罪的本能とか ― まだ死よりも強いものはたくさんあるのに相違ない。つまりあらゆる情熱は死よりも強いものなのであろう。（もちろん死に対する情熱は例外である。）かつまた恋はそういうもののうちでも、特に死よりも強いかどうか、迂闊に断言はできないらしい。一見、死よりも強いと見なされやすい場合さえ、実はわれわれを支配しているのはフランス人のいわゆるボヴァリズムである。われわれ自身を伝奇の中の恋人のように空想するボヴァリイ夫人以来の感傷主義である。
