早稲田大学の社会人向け講座または翻訳サイトのこと

早稲田大学の「デジタル時代のマーケティング総合講座」で、外部から招いた講師が女性蔑視発言をした事件を聞いて、２０年くらい前に、この大学の社会人向け講座を受講したことを思い出した。

前に書いた記事のように、私は一斉授業を進んで受けたくないと思っている。早稲田大学のオープンカレッジで受講した科目は、英作文だった。英作文を選んだ理由も全く覚えていない。後になってそれが役立った、というわけでもない。今思うと、不思議である。

週に１回、2ヶ月間、八丁堀にある、早稲田大学のエクステンションセンターに通った。その当時、仕事の関係で地下鉄の日比谷線に乗っていたので、途中下車して、たまには変わったことをしようと思ったのかもしれない。エクステンションセンターは、以前、小学校だった建物を活用している。一緒に英作文を学んだ生徒数は１０人少々だった。

もちろん、その頃は、今のようにインターネットで和文英訳や英文和訳が無料でできるようになるとは思ってもいなかった。もし必要なら、前にこの記事で紹介したように、Google翻訳でラテン語を英語に翻訳することさえできる（※）。

このようにインターネットの翻訳サービスが充実している今でも、早稲田大学のオープンカレッジでは、英作文の講座を開設している。単に例文を英語に訳すというよりは、文章の組み立て方を学ぶカリキュラムなので、魅かれる人もいるだろう。この「実践英文ライティング」の受講料は、３万円である。

早稲田大学の「デジタル時代のマーケティング総合講座」の受講料は３８万５千円もする。それに比べるととっても安いのだけれど、英作文の授業を受けることはもうないだろう。

今、私が和文英訳をするのは、このnoteに投稿するときくらいである。漢字変換の過ちやその他の入力ミスを見つけるために、Google翻訳とDeepL翻訳を使って原稿を英訳している。こういう用途であれば、これらのツールは十分に役立つ。同じ原文でも、いい翻訳と、そうでもない翻訳とが表示されることがあるので、いいと思う方を選んで、原文の下につけている。

時には、完全に間違っている翻訳を提示されることがある。例えば、
「一緒に英作文を学んだ生徒数は１０人少々だった。」
という文をGoogle翻訳で英訳すると
The number of students who learned English writing together was a little over 10.
であり、これは正しい。一方、DeepLで英訳すると
The number of students who studied English composition together was a little less than 10.
となる。これは誤りであり、これをDeepLで和訳すると
英作文を一緒に勉強した学生は10人弱。
となる。さすがに再翻訳して、原文と照合する仕組みはもっていないようだ。DeepLは蓄積した知識に基づいて、最も正しそうな言葉に置き換えているのだろうが、「まだ経験が足りない、しっかりやれ」と言いたくなる。

逆にDeepLでは正しく、Google翻訳がそぐわないこともある。ただ、両方とも使えないことはあまりない。

※なお、この記事によれば、Googleは翻訳対応言語をさらに増やし続けている。翻訳対応言語の拡大は利用者を増やすためのサービス拡充だと思うが、収益の善い使い方の一つだと思う。

しかし、太平洋戦争中に、アメリカ軍が暗号通信のための言語として使ったというナバホ語は、まだ翻訳対応リストに載っていない。日本人が知らないナバホ語を使う人を暗号通信兵（コードトーカー）に使ったという歴史的事実については、この記事に詳しい。

Waseda University's course for working adults or translation site

When I heard that a lecturer invited from outside made a disdain for women at Waseda University's "Comprehensive Marketing Course in the Digital Age," I remembered taking a course for working adults at this university about 20 years ago.

As I wrote in a previous article, I am not willing to take a simultaneous class. The subject I took at Waseda University's Open College was English Composition. I don't even remember why I chose English Composition at all. It is not that it helped me later. It is strange to think about it now.

Once a week for two months, I went to the Waseda University Extension Center in Hatchobori. At the time, I was riding the Hibiya subway line for work, so perhaps I decided to get off on the way and do something different once in a while. The Extension Center utilizes a building that used to be an elementary school. The number of students who studied English composition together was a little over 10.

Of course, at that time, I never thought that Japanese-English translation and English-Japanese translation would be available for free on the Internet as it is now. If you want, you can even translate Latin into English with Google Translate, as introduced earlier in this article(*).

Even now, with such a full range of Internet translation services, Waseda University's open college still offers English composition courses. Some people may be fascinated by the curriculum, which teaches how to compose sentences rather than simply translating example sentences into English. The tuition fee for this "Practical English writing" is 30,000 yen.

Waseda University's "Comprehensive Marketing Course in the Digital Age" costs 385,000 yen. It's cheaper than that, but I won't be taking English composition classes anymore.

Right now, I only translate Japanese into English when I post to this note. I use Google Translate and DeepL Translator to translate the manuscript into English to find mistakes in Kanji conversion and other typos. For these purposes, these tools are useful enough. Even in the same original text, good translation and bad translation may be displayed, so I select the good one I like and put it below the original text.

At times, you may be presented with a completely incorrect translation. It doesn't seem to have a mechanism to retranslate and collate with the original text. The translation site may have replaced it with the most correct words based on the accumulated knowledge, but I want to say, "You are not yet experienced, do it well."

However, it's not uncommon for both to be unusable.

(*)According to this article, Google continues to further increase the number of languages that can be translated. I think the expansion of languages is a good use of earnings, as well as an expansion of services to increase the number of users.
