東京大学入学式の祝辞で変な引用をされた金峯山寺は３月２３日に戦争反対の声明を発表していた

金峯山寺を総本山とする金峯山修験本宗の臨時宗議会が、去る3月23日に開催され、審議の結果、次に掲げる『平和を希求する声明』を発表しました。
平和を希求する声明
如何なる戦争も認めません。許すことはありません。世界中のあらゆる軍事衝突の即時の終結と和平を求め、世界平和、人類の平安を希求します。人間の生きる尊厳を損なう行為は国家たりとも行ってはならないと確信します。成熟した人類社会の当たり前を今一度取り戻したいと願います。
私たち大乗菩薩宗団たる金峯山修験本宗は、いかなる理由があろうとも、人命を軽視し、武力で一方的に現状を変更しようとする暴力的な行為に抗議し、強く反対の意を表します。
世界各地ではテロや武力紛争が続いている現実があります。あらためてあらゆる場での暴力の行使を非難するとともに、一刻も早く対話による平和的な解決がなされ、世界に平安が訪れますよう、全世界の人々に強く求めます。

私は以前、東京大学の入学式の祝辞に関する記事を投稿しました。その中で、祝辞を述べた人が、金峯山寺の管長のつぶやきを「逃さなかった」と言い、さらにそのつぶやきの内容を勝手に解釈しているのは、ずるいと書きました。五條良知さんという金峯山寺の管長が実際に何をつぶやいたのかはわかりませんが、冒頭に引用した通り、金峯山寺を総本山とする金峯山修験本宗の臨時宗議会は、「戦争反対」の声明を発表しています。

「管長様にこの言葉の真意を問うた訳ではないので、これは私の感じ方に過ぎないと思って聞いてください」などと言って自分個人の感想をしゃべった人は、スピーチの前に、金峯山寺の声明を見ることもしなかったのでしょう。

ただし、日本の宗教団体が「戦争反対」を言えるようになったのは、それほど前のことではありません。宗教界も、太平洋戦争時に協力しました。また、太平洋戦争に反対した宗教者の公式な名誉回復が行われたのは、ごく最近だったりします。そのことについて詳しく書かれた、『近代日本の戦争と宗教』という本を、後日紹介したいと思います。

そして、かつて東京大学が東京帝国大学という名前だった頃には、学徒出陣と称して、学生を太平洋戦争に供出しました。

東京大学史史料室編『東京大学の学徒動員学徒出陣』東京大学出版会、１９９８年によると、１９４４年８月時点で、学部・大学院在籍者9,285人のうち、入営者3,304人で、入営比率35.58%となっています。

そういう過去を振り返りながら、新入生たちに戦争について考えさせる話をしてもらえる人を入学式に呼ぶべきだったと思います。

こういう話は、入学式の祝辞にふさわしくないでしょうか？しかし、東京大学という箔付けや、ましてや女子禁制の男子専用クラブに入ることが入学の目的でないならば、このような祝辞があってもいいと思います。

Kinpusenji, quoted in the congratulatory address of the University of Tokyo entrance ceremony, issued a statement against the war on March 23.

On March 23, an extraordinary assembly of the Kinpusan Shugen Buddhist sect, of which Kinpusenji is the head temple, was held to deliberate on the following statement. We do not accept any kind of war. No war of any kind will be tolerated. We call for an immediate end to all military conflicts and peace throughout the world, and we desire world peace and the tranquility of mankind. We are convinced that no nation should commit any act that undermines the dignity of human life. We wish to restore once again the normalcy of a mature human society. We, the Bodhisattva Mahayana Sect, Kinpusan Shugen Honshu, protest and strongly oppose any violent acts that attempt to unilaterally change the status quo by force, with disregard for human life, no matter what the reasons may be. The reality is that terrorism and armed conflicts continue in many parts of the world. We again condemn the use of violence in all its forms, and urge all people of the world to pray for a peaceful resolution through dialogue as soon as possible, so that peace may return to the world.

I previously posted an article regarding the congratulatory address at the University of Tokyo's Commencement Ceremony. In that article, I wrote that it was unfair that the congratulatory address speaker "did not miss" a tweet from the president of Kinpusenji Temple, and furthermore, that she interpreted the content of the tweet without permission. I do not know what Mr. Gojo Yoshitomo, the president of Kinpusenji Temple, actually tweeted, but as quoted at the beginning of this article, the Provisional Sozokai of the Kinpusen Shugen Buddhist sect, of which Kinpusenji is the head temple, has issued a statement "against war".

The speaker who said "I didn't ask the president the true meaning of this word, so please think that this is just my feeling" probably didn't even see the statement from Kinpusenji Temple before the speech.

However, It wasn't long before Japanese religious groups began to say "against war." The religious community also cooperated with the military and government during the Pacific War. Also, the official rehabilitation of religious people who opposed the Pacific War has only recently taken place. I would like to introduce a book called "War and Religion in Modern Japan" that describes this in detail at a later date.

And, when the University of Tokyo was once named Tokyo Imperial University, there was a past where students were sent to war under the name of "Gakuto Shutujin".

According to the University of Tokyo Press, 1998, "The University of Tokyo's Student Mobilization and Student Departure," edited by the History and Archives Room of the University of Tokyo, as of August 1944, of the 9,285 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled, 3,304 were enrolled, and the enrollment ratio was 35.58%.

I think the university should have had someone come in to talk to the new students to make them think about the war while reflecting on such a past.

Isn't such a speech suitable for the entrance ceremony congratulations? However, if the purpose of admission is not to join the University of Tokyo, let alone to join a men's club, I would like new students to listen to such congratulatory messages.
