図書館の老人たちと大学生たち
最寄りの市立図書館に行くと、新聞コーナーがある。この記事に書いたような、定年退職した男たちが日経新聞を取り合う、という光景を目にしたことはない。
行きつけの理髪店の店主によると、ある図書館では、朝、常連のグループのメンバーが、新聞各紙を順番に回して読んでいる。そこにグループ外の新参者が来て新聞を読もうとすると、気まずい雰囲気になるそうだ。
そういった光景は日本だけではない。
立派な古い図書館の建物の至るところに、年金受給者がいた。
彼らは何時間も同じ場所に坐り、うとうとしながら『デイリー・メール』紙の自分の順番がまわってくるのを待ち、ヨーロッパを批判する記事を読もうとしていた。
ときどき、新聞を読む時間について口論が起き、独り占めしていると判断された人には大きな怒りが向けられた――「おいジャック、もう充分読んだだろ、ええ？」。
時々、その市立図書館で日経新聞を読む。時には、過去２週間ほどの日経新聞をまとめて机に持って行ってしまう人もいて閉口する。
新聞はだいたいよれよれである。大勢の人が読むからだろうが、カサカサの指につばをつけてページをめくる老人を見かけた。
『あの病気』が流行っていた頃にはそのような人を見かけなかったのだが、もう気にしないのだろうか。
ピークは越えたが、インフルエンザや新型コロナの感染数は今でも多いのに。

よれよれの新聞を読むのに抵抗感を覚えたので、その図書館で日経新聞を読むのは控えるようにした。少し遠いが、ある大学図書館を利用できるので、だいたいそこで日経新聞を読んでいる。そこでは、数日前の新聞でも、ほとんど真新しい状態で読めたりするのだ。
その大学図書館では、新聞だけでなく、新刊図書もあまり借りられていないように見える。
私が大学生だった頃と比べて、最近の大学生は新聞や本を読まないのだろうか、もったいないと思う。

Elderly people and university students in the library
The nearest city library has a newspaper corner. I have never seen retired men competing for the Nikkei Shimbun newspaper like I wrote in this article.
According to the owner of the barber shop I frequent, in one library, members of a group of regulars take turns reading each newspaper in the morning. Apparently, if a newcomer from outside the group comes and tries to read the newspaper, the atmosphere becomes awkward.
Such scenes are not only found in Japan.
Sometimes I read the Nikkei Shimbun at the city library. Some people collect the past two weeks of Nikkei newspapers and take them to their desks, which is frustrating.
Most of the newspapers are shabby. Probably because so many people read it. But I saw an old person turning the pages with spit on his/her dry fingers. I didn't see people like that when "that disease" was prevalent, but I wonder if they don't care anymore.
Although we have passed the peak, the number of influenza and new coronavirus infections is still high.
I am reminded of the murder trick in the movie "The Name of the Rose." A person who found a hidden secret book tries to read the page that is difficult to open ……

I felt a sense of reluctance to read worn-out newspapers, so I refrained from reading the Nikkei Shimbun at the library. Although it's a little far away, I have access to a university library, so I usually read the Nikkei Shimbun there. Moreover, there you can read even newspapers from a few days ago in almost brand new condition.
Not only newspapers but also new books don't seem to be borrowed very often at the university library. I wonder if college students these days don't read newspapers or books as much as they did when I was a college student. I think it's a waste.
