LOGIN Project vol.2

私達は、2月６日から７日にかけてROOTSさんが“森から創る暮らし”をテーマに企画したLOGINプロジェクトvol.2に、ボランティアとして参加しました。
約２０名程の年齢も職業も様々なゲストが参加され、朝から日が暮れるまで夢中になって沢山のスツールを作りました。
彼らにイベントに参加した理由について聞いてみると、DIYに興味がある、子供にもの作りの体験をさせたい、おしゃれなスツールを作りたい！など様々。中には京北に移住を考えているため、このイベントをきっかけに京北がどのような場所か見てみたかったという方もいらっしゃいました。

We participated in the LOGIN Project vol.2 as volunteers. This event was held by ROOTS, which has the purpose of “Making Life From The Forest”.
There were about 20 guests with different backgrounds. They spent an interesting time making wood-made chairs from 9 am until 5 pm.
We asked them “Why did you sign up for this event ?” Many guests signed up for LOGIN vol.2 because they were interested in making things by themselves.
Also, some people are wondering whether to move into the Keihoku area so they joined this event to see the environment.

岸　あやか Ayaka Kishi
京都外国語大学在学中はカナダで語学や国際問題について学ぶ。卒業後は、旅行会社に勤務しながら、週末は京都で訪日外国人観光客のためボランティアツアーガイドとして活動。趣味は、様々な国籍、背景を持つ人と出逢い話をすること、歴史、フルマラソン、山。
地方創生や人と自然が共存する循環型社会のあり方について勉強中！
Learning English, North American History and global issues in Canada.
After Graduation, I volunteered at Kyoto as a tour guide for foreign tourists while working at a travel agency.
My hobbies: Talking with people who has different backgrounds/nationality•Studying history•Marathon•Hiking etc.
Interested in revitalizing rural areas and sustainable lifestyle of Satoyama.

浦　茄衣理　Kairi Ura
1996年　南紀白浜育ちのビーチガール。
京都外国語大学在学中、メキシコのエコヴィレッジでのボランティア活動をきっかけに環境に興味を持ち、今はドイツで環境学を学ぶため奮闘中。
最近のブームは、コンポストづくりと、苔の育成。
京北里山での循環型の生活を学び、様々な場所でも応用できる持続可能な ライフスタイルを模索している。
I started to be interested in environmental studies after I had experienced volunteering at Eco-village in Mexico. For the next step, I’m aiming to study environmental studies in Germany.
I want to learn about a sustainable Satoyama lifestyle in Keihoku and seek a sustainable lifestyle that can be applied in various places. Now I'm into making compost and growing Moss in my backyard :)

1, 講師:フランス人建築家アーティスト
French Architect artist2M26　
セバスチャン(Sebastien Renauld)＆メラニー(Melanie Herebach)

今回のLOGINプロジェクトはフランス出身の建築家アーティスト、セバスチャンとメラニーを講師に迎え開催されました。彼らは現在京都を拠点に活動しており、町屋をリノベーションした自宅で暮らしています。(※１参照)
２人はとても親しみやすい人柄で、始めは緊張気味だったゲストとも言語があまり通じないにもかかわらずすぐに打ち解けていました。

We had special teachers for this event, Sebastian and Melanie. They are architects hailing from France.
They are based in Kyoto, and live in an old Japanese-style house which they renovated by themselves.(※1pic Machiya)
In the beginning, some guests looked a little nervous but eventually everyone spoke with them freely, regardless of language skills, thanks to their friendly and approachable personalities.

彼らは活動の一つとして、世界各地の路上でゲリラアートパフォーマンスを行っています。これは、自らが手掛けたテーブルや椅子、ベッドを路上に広げそこで人々によって自然に生まれるコミュニケーションを図るというものです。

They have performed “guerilla art" on the streets all over the world to see how random people start to communicate with each other through the use of their handmade chairs and tables.

このパフォーマンスについて彼らに話を聞くと、活動の中で「この企画は政治的な目的か、もしくは何かに対する抗議かどちらの理由でしているのか？」と聞かれることがよくあったそうです。何かをする原動力はこのようなネガティブな理由にあると大勢が思い込んでいることに驚いたと言っていました。
「僕等の活動の目的はそのいずれでもなく、テーブルと椅子があれば自然に人が集まって談笑が始まり、人と人とが繋がるきっかけになるという事を示したかっただけだ」と話してくれました。

Often people ask them about the purpose of this performance. “Is it for political reasons or some kind of protest? ”
Surprisingly, a lot of people believe that the reason comes from negative thoughts. Sebastian and Melanie just wanted to demonstrate that simple tools like a table and a chair can make people gather, start chatting and connect.

サステナブルな建築スタイル
Sustainable architect style

また、彼らは建築において循環型のスタイルを大切にしています。
建築前の図面を考える段階で、家族の成長やライフスタイルに合わせてフレキシブルにデザインを変えたり、作り変えることができるような工夫をしているそうです。
さらに建築に使用する材料はすべて再利用でき、傷んでしまいもう建材として使えなくなってしまったものでも薪として使用するなど、廃棄物の全く出ないゼロウェストな建築を実践しています。

Additionally, they are focusing on sustainable architecture and zero-waste construction. They design and build flexible and easily changed houses. Depending on their clients’ lifestyle and the landscape they are in, they can customize what they do to respond to their clients’ needs. All materials that are used to build the houses are reusable and they even use damaged materials for firewood.

たった3つの道具＋たった４～５人で約３週間で一軒完成させてしまうそう！
Built this house only using 3 tools, by 4～5 people in 3 weeks !!!

2, イベントの様子　 About the event

【今回作ったスツールたち】
私達は今回京北杉を使って３つの椅子を作りました！
We made three kinds of chairs by using Keihoku cedar.

1.Hexa stool
重なり合う木目のデザインが美しい
The beautiful patterns of timber

2.Split stool
ひびの入った丸太の個性を美しく引き出す
To enhance the beauty coming from the uniqueness of each crack of the logs

3.こういうのも作っちゃいました！
We did that too !

【DAY1】
初日はROOTS共同代表の中山さんとフェイランさんによる、ROOTSの活動や京北地域、また林業についてのイントロダクションから始まりました。
その後、2M26のお二人が世界各地でアーティストとして行ってきたユニークなプロジェクトや、彼らが実践するサステナブルな建築様式について説明してくれました。

The event started with a short introduction of the activities of ROOTS, the Keihoku area, and forestry. Then 2M26 showed us the unique projects they have done in many countries and explained sustainable architectural style.

今回イベントに使用したのはこの地域で取れた京北杉。そこで、京北と林業の関係について調べてみました。
In this event we built chairs by using Keihoku cedar which is the tree from the region so we studied about Keihoku and forestry.

3, イベントを終えて　
What they got from LOGIN vol.2

★なんだ、作れちゃうじゃん！
We got not only these chairs but more than that.

参加者のほとんどがDIY初心者だったにも関わらず、最後には工具を初めて持ったおっちゃんも主婦も少年も、皆が棟梁になったかのようでした。
慣れた手つきで次から次に椅子を完成させ、最終的になんと20名弱で51脚も作り上げることができました！

Even though most of the guests were beginners, in the end, they all looked like carpenters to me. There were about 21 guests but eventually, they could complete a total of 51 chairs!

★もの作りは人づくり
To build things is to build human resources.

中でも目覚ましい成長を見せたのは子供たち。
初めは母親に手伝ってもらいながらだった少年が、2日目には自ら図面を書きフランス人の2人とコミュニケーションを取りながら、1人で工具を使いこなす姿には感動しました。母親のみさとさんは、「普段息子はゲームばかりしがち、今回のイベントでもの作りに一生懸命取り組む姿が見れて嬉しい」と話してくれました。

Among them, the kids showed spectacular progress. In the beginning, one of the kids was always being helped by his mother, but on the second day, he was able to use every tool and draw the blueprint all by himself by communicating with French teachers. We were really impressed by his dedication. His mother was happy that her son, who is usually only interested in playing video games, was now showing a deep interest in making things.

将来の夢は大工さんなのだそう
He told me that he want to be a carpenter in the future!

★共に作るということ To create together

今回セバスチャンとメラニーの通訳として意気込んで参加した私達の出番はほとんどありませんでした。
参加者の多くが英語を流暢に話せるわけではなかったのにも関わらず、片言の英語と身振り手振りでフランス人の2人と十分にコミュニケーションを取り作業を進めていました。

We were invited to this event as translators for the french carpenters and ready to do so but after a few hours, all guests ended up communicating through gestures and only a few English words.

私たち自身外国語大学で4年間言語を学び留学までしましたが、このイベントを通じて実際のところ異文化コミュニケーションにおいて言語が流暢に話せるかどうかは、そこまで重要な問題ではないとさえ感じました。

We studied foreign languages at university for four years and even studied abroad in order to speak a foreign language fluently but after all, we learned from the guests that communicating with foreigners does not only depend on language skills.

何かを共に作り上げる事により国籍も年齢も立場も関係なく、初対面だった参加者同士の距離がどんどん縮まっていく。LOGINは決してただの木工教室ではなく、参加者も時には先生になり教え合ったりと、皆が主役なイベントです。

Even if everyone meets for the first time, people could get close by making something together regardless of their age, nationality, or position in society. This event was absolutely not a simple woodworking class but a place where everyone could learn from each other as well.

ものづくりは大人達をまるで少年に戻ったかの夢中にさせて、子供たちを頼もしく成長させる
“Making things makes children grow up, and makes adults children again ”

子供連れで参加したお母さんは、「子どもをずっと見ていなくても皆が世話をしてくれるあたたかい雰囲気がうれしかった。おかげで作業に没頭できた」と話してくれました。

We heard from a mother that came with her daughter that she didn't have to look over her child because the other guests were also taking care of her. Thanks to this, the mother could focus. This event is creating a sense of community.

★もの作りの喜び　
The enjoyment of making thing by yourself

イベントに参加した今出さんは、“娘にあげる椅子にはあえてネジを打つために付けた印を残したい”と話してくれました。
皆が作る様子を見ていて、それぞれがプレゼントする相手の事を想像したり、実際に使う場面を思い浮かべわくわくしながら作業する姿がとても素敵でした。

Mr. Imade who participated in the event said that he would be happy to keep the marks of the drill on the chair in order to give them to his daughter as a way to show her the efforts he put into making it. It was enjoyable to look at the faces of the guests imagining the reactions of their loved ones when they would give their chairs.

このような作り手の想いを知っていれば、もしくはそれが一から自分で作った物であれば、より愛着がわき壊れたらすぐに捨てて新しいものを買う代わりに、修理して長く使い続けたいと自然に思えるようになるのではないでしょうか。
また、丸太を実際に切ってみたり磨いてみたりすることで、木をただの木材としてではなく、それが自然からの頂きものであると実感したと振り返る参加者もいました。

By knowing the feeling of making things by themselves for someone else, the guest will naturally tend to try to fix broken things instead of throwing them away and buying new ones.
Also, at the end of the event, one guest told me that from the experience of making chairs from the beginning by cutting/polishing them, he recognized the tree is not only lumber but also as a precious gift from mother nature.

このような体験の積み重ねが、人と自然が共存するための持続可能な生活様式を見直すきっかけになるのではないでしょうか。

We believe that this accumulation of experiences will be the trigger of reconsideration of sustainable lifestyles for the coexistence of people and nature.

4, 終わりに　As closure

最後に今回騒音を気にせずに広々としたスペースで作業ができるよう、感染対策も徹底した上で場所を提供してくださった、あうる京北の皆様ありがとうございます。
イベントの最後に2M26のお二人が「椅子の次は皆で家を建てちゃおうか！」とニヤリ。この想像するだけでもわくわくする企画がいつか実現するのが今から楽しみ...！

地方を盛り上げるため、京北を拠点に様々な事業やイベントを行うROOTS。今回LOGINプロジェクトvol.2に携わらせていただき、お２人の地方創生に対する姿勢や考えに触れることができて本当に良かった。
ROOTSの皆さん、次のイベントも楽しみにしていまーす！！

At the end of the event, 2M26 suggested to us by saying “Next time let's build the house together!?''. We are so excited for this amazing plan already, and hope it becomes true sometime soon...!
