スミレの山　高尾山⑨　ヒラツカスミレ Takao, the mountain of violets: No.9 Hiratsuka-sumire

高尾山は、知る人ぞ知るスミレの山。
日本では、約５０種のスミレの野生種(*1)が確認されていますが、高尾にはそのうち１８種が自生している(*2)と言われています。高尾山ならびにその周辺では、毎年３月上旬から５月下旬にかけて、あちこちで可憐なスミレの花々を観察することができます。

Mt. Takao is known as habitats for a wide variety of wild violet flowers (in Japanese, sumire, or “Sue-Mee-Ray”). In Japan, about 50 species of wild violets (*1) have been confirmed, and 18 of them are said to grow naturally in the Mt. Takao area(*2). Every year from the beginning of March to the end of May, you can find pretty violet flowers all over the place in Mt. Takao and its surroundings.

ヒラツカスミレはヒゴスミレとエイザンスミレが交雑したもので、植物学的には独立した種として識別されていません。

Hiratsuka-sumire is a crossbreeding of Higo-sumire and Eizan-sumire. Botanically, it is not identified as an independent species.

エイザンスミレは、高尾山ならびにその周辺では、季節になるとあちらこちらで普通に見られます。高尾エリアでは、最も多く観察されるスミレのひとつです。ところが、ヒゴスミレは高尾では極めて希少で、野生の姿を見ることはほとんど奇跡に近くなっています。そんなヒゴスミレとの交雑を見つけるのは、運以上に、人から飽きられるほどの、報われる可能性を放棄した地道な探索の積み重ねしかありません。ある特定の地域ではそんなに珍しい存在ではないと聞いたことがありますが、本当でしょうか。

Eizan-sumire are commonly seen during their blooming season on Mt. Takao and its surroundings. They are one of the most commonly observed violets in the Takao area. Higo-sumire are, however, extremely rare in Takao, and finding them naturally is almost a miracle. Given that, finding a natural crossbreeding with Higo-sumire in the Takao area requires more than luck; it entails meticulously thorough and mind-numbing, but targeted searches, without any hope that they will return any rewards of any sort. I have heard that it is such a piece of cake to find them in certain regions elsewhere in Japan, but it just sounds incredible to me.

ヒラツカスミレは、葉にヒゴスミレ、花にエイザンスミレの特徴を受けつぐまさにハイブリッドな姿で、なにせ馴染みが全くないので、写真の個体を見つけた時はなんのスミレか全くわかりませんでした。スミレは種同士の交雑がある程度可能らしいのですが、写真の種は葉の成長が不完全でした。やはり自然において、交雑種は独立した種として命を繋いでいくのは難しいのでしょうか。

Hiratsuka-sumire have the characteristics of Higo-sumire in the leaves and Eizan-sumire in the flowers, and their look is just so simply hybrid. At the first glance at the one in the pictures, I could not tell what sort of violets they were. Certain violets are known to be capable of crossbreeding between species, but the leaves for the one in the pictures were incomplete and not fully grown. Maybe it is difficult for crossbreeds to survive as independent species in nature.

花はエイザンスミレ、葉はヒゴスミレの特徴を持つ。
The flowers have the characteristics of Eizan-sumire, and the leaves have the characteristics of Higo-sumire.
