子どもたちの未来のために ダンさん｜現地パートナースタッフ

そんな、現地パートナー団体のスタッフの皆さんに、お仕事の内容や事業にかける思いなどをお聞きしました！

今回ご紹介するのは、ケニアの現地パートナー団体ヴィアジェンコのスタッフです！
ヴィアジェンコでは、ライフプランニング支援や生計向上支援を行っており、特にライフプランニング支援では、カウンセラーとして育成されたスタッフの皆さんが事業を支えています。
◆自己紹介 & プロジェクトの紹介
私の名前はダニエル・セコです。ムビタ小郡の子供たちの未来をより良くしようとしている34歳のエネルギッシュな若者です。ご存知のように、ムビタはケニアの旧ニャンザ州、現在はホマベイ郡にあるビクトリア湖畔の農村地域で、高いHIV感染率と貧困、学校の退学などの問題があります。私は地域に根差した活動をしているビアジェンゴで、PLAS協働プロジェクトのカウンセラーとして働いています。このプロジェクトは、HIV/AIDSの影響を受けている脆弱な家庭のなかで暮らす、あるいは孤児として暮らす子どもたちの教育・雇用機会のための包括的なプログラムです。このプログラムをより拡大していくことにも重きをおいています。
◆カウンセラーとしての思い
思春期の子どもたちは、男の子も女の子も、”人生について何でも知っている”という態度をとるかもしれません。しかし、教育やライフスキルの向上、生活水準の改善、さらにはHIV感染や望まない妊娠を防ぐために必要な正しい情報や教育、スキルを持っていない場合がほとんどです。
思春期の子どもたちや若い女の子にリプロダクティブヘルス（性と生殖に関する健康）について話すのは親であってもほとんどの人にとって抵抗感のあることです。クールに話したいと思いつつも、妙に古めかしく感じてしまいます。しかし、この地域では、10代の望まない妊娠や、学校を中退した若者のHIV感染率が依然として高いのです。私は時々、なぜ親は子どもに性と生殖に関する情報を話すことを恐れるのだろう？と不思議に思います。
子どもたちのより良い未来のために、一若者として、このギャップを埋め、多くの親と子どもたちにこの重要な情報を伝えたいと強く思っています。性に関する質の高い情報にアクセスすることで、リプロダクティブヘルスをコントロールできるようになり、早い時期からの性教育は悪影響であるというイメージを払拭することができると信じています。
カウンセラーとしての私の日々の役割は、子どもたちに自分のキャリアやその実現方法について話し、リプロダクティブヘルスの問題など直面しうる課題を明らかにし、それにどう対処するかを手助けしながら考え、努力によって人生を変えられることを子どもたちに知ってもらい、さらにライフキャリアレインボーのワークシートを使って一緒に人生設計をすることです。また月に一度、10人の保護者にも、家庭での子どもの発達とケア、子どもとのポジティブなコミュニケーションスキル、子どもの宿題にかかわる理由、子どものリプロダクティブヘルス問題への対処法などについて話しています。
◆プロジェクトの意義
長い一日の仕事の後、仲間と一緒に座り、現場での経験を共有するのは貴重な時間です。そして、確実に落ち着けるものです。
正直なところ、リプロダクティブヘルスについてのレクチャーは、若く活気のある世代にとって最良の選択だと思います。子どもたちへのキャリアカウンセリングは、私たちのコミュニティや将来のリーダーにとって、必ずやらなくてはならないプロジェクトのひとつでした。PLASのこの取り組みに感謝し、このプロジェクトでより多くの子どもたちがサポートされることを望みます。

My name is Daniel Seko, 34-year-old, lively and energetic young man who is determined to make a better future for the young children in Mbita Sub-county. As we all know, Mbita is a rural community in the former province of Nyanza, Kenya, currently in Homa Bay County, on the shores of Lake Victoria affected by high HIV prevalence, poverty and school drop outs. I am currently working for VIGENCO, a community based organization as a Counselor under PLAS project; a project focusing on expanding comprehensive program for education/ employment opportunities for school age children who live in vulnerable families or are orphans affected by HIV/AIDS.
Adolescents and young children, both boys and girls, may have a know-it-all attitude about life, but they usually do not have the correct information, education and skills they need to make informed choices when it comes to improving education, life skills as well as better leaving standard’s and even preventing HIV infection & unwanted pregnancies. Talking to adolescents and young girls about SRH is usually an awkward thing for most of the people even parents. They want to be cool about it, but feel strangely ancient. They want to be relaxed and open, yet unintended teenage pregnancy remains high in the region as well as HIV infection among the youths including school dropout. Mmhh……sometimes I wonder, why parents fear talking to their children about sexual and reproductive health information?
As a young man who is determined to make a better future for the young children, I feel motivated to bridge this gap and talk to many parents and children about this important information. I believe access to quality information on sexuality would help them gain increased control over their reproductive health and clear up imagined fear of adverse side effects of early sexuality education. As a counselor, my daily role is to talk with children about their career, how they can achieve it, help them identify the challenges they may encounter like SRH issues, how to go about it, encourage the children to know that effort can change their life and even plan life together through life role rainbow sheet. Parental counseling to caregivers is also one of my many roles, once a month I talk to 10 caregivers at household level on child development & care, positive communication skills with children, give them reason why they need to get involved in their children’s homework and even how to address SRH issue with their children.
After a long day’s work, sitting around with peers and sharing in my experience on the field is priceless. And definitely anything to chill with.
I honestly think providing SRH services is the best course for a generation full of a young and vibrant population. Career counseling for children was one of the most obligatory project for our community and future leaders. I thank PLAS for this initiative and would wish to see many children supported on this project.
