Tom Waits - San Diego Serenade -

ちょうど昨日（2020年11月1日）、辻堂のBAY134でShime&西海孝のライブを観てきたんだけど、そこでも演ってましたね「サンディエゴ・セレナーデ」。この曲の歌詞が好きな人、多いだろうな。『The Heart of Saturday Night』の2曲目。1曲目の「New Coat of Paint」から続けて聴くと本当にこの人の歌の世界にやられてしまう。それにしてもなんて素敵な詩なんだろう。

昔民放で井上堯之が司会をしている音楽番組があって、そこで「in the neighborhood」が流れてて、それがトムウェイツとの出会い。物凄いダミ声で、世の中にはいろいろな音楽があるのだなと思い、この曲が入った『Swordfishtrombones』が最初に買った一枚。調べてみると、すでにかなりの枚数のアルバムを出していることを知り、その後、遡って聴いていって、アサイラムのファーストとセカンドはとてもお気に入りのアルバムになり、今でもよく聴く。

俳優としても、好きだった『ランブル・フィッシュ』にちょい役で出てましたね。それがとても渋くて。「若い頃の1年や2年はあっという間だ。でも俺には後35回の夏しか残ってない」みたいなセリフ（かなりうろ覚えですが）が印象的で覚えてる。『ダウン・バイ・ロー』も好きな映画。

彼の歌は、ひょっとしたら「歌っている」というより「演じている」といった方が合うかも。ちょっと誤解を招くかもしれないけど、これは演じるのがよくないと言っているわけではなく、それが彼の物凄い個性と存在感を作っているというか。初期の頃は結構歌っている感じなんだけど、どんどん何かを演じている色合いが濃くなっていく。その演じ方が唯一無二。
