短い問題を（なるべく）理屈で考え、答えを出していくシリーズです。
今回も東京大学の2022年の問題です。

(A)が指している内容を示したうえで、それがなぜ "unthinkable" なのかを
説明せよ。

ヒントに対する解答

(1) 「考えられないこと」と逆になっているのは「typical：典型的な」。このtypicalは形容詞で「American town」と結びつきます。

(2) this placeは「American town」を指している。
(1)で確認したように、このAmerican townは典型的であるため、形容詞としてthis placeと結びついているwhere以下の内容も、同じく典型的なものだと予想がつきます。
細かく見ると、「the men」や「the women」は「(その町にいる典型的な)男性 / 女性」です。

(3) 現在形の動詞が動作(アクション)の場合、【 習慣 】を表します。この英文では「do the driving」「make their mouths into perfect Os」です。これは(2)でも確認したように典型的なもの(習慣)です。
一方で現在完了形は【 今の状態 】を表します。「have done」や「have made」は習慣ではなく、今の状態です。
ここからも「典型的(習慣的)な状態」と「今の状態」が浮き彫りになっています。

なぜ「unthinkable」なのかを説明するために、典型的(習慣的)な状況を記述する必要があるでしょう。

答えと和訳

答え：
ミュージカルで女の子を男の子役にしたことを指していて、1980年代のこの町では男性と女性の行動がはっきりと分かれていたので、これは「考えられない」ことだった。

和訳：
学校がミュージカル「南太平洋」を上演しようとしていて、女の子の役が十分にない。彼女は男の子と同じくらい、あるいはもっと背が高い。そのため、男が車を運転し、女はバックミラーで口をOの形にして口紅を塗るようなこの典型的な1980年代のアメリカの町で、学校は考えられないことをした。ミュージカルのために、彼女を男の子(役)にしたのだ。
