Kashmir, India is known for its breath taking, natural beauty. Be it snow-capped mountains, coniferous forests, pristine lakes and gorgeous valleys, Kashmir has it all. Pinjrakaari an art carving is done in light wood that is used on windows, doors, ventilators, railings or ornamental partitions and screens. In its original form, glues and nails were not used in this technique; the precision of the joinery alone held it together. The "Pinjra" frames are pasted with handmade paper, thus effectively keeping out cold winds and yet allowing a sufficient amount of light to pass through. Pinjrakari uses complex mathematical calculations and algorithms. This art evolved through collaborative efforts of mathematicians and artisans of Kashmir.

Pinjraakari windows change the way you look at the world. The windows give a very delicate and artistic element to any home. Sunlight filters through these pretty doorways making way for designer shadows that have a unique feel and a mystic look. Time spent in these shadows is meditative and reflective. They have functional attributes too. Besides the privacy factor they helped control the scorching sun during summer and cold drafts during winters. The number of artists who can create these art forms is limited. But today there are furniture designers who are adapting it to small furniture items such as lampshades, windowpanes and other small wooden furniture.
Pinjrakaari will find a new leash on life if revived and adapted well. Bring a beautiful sieve to your window and watch light play hide and seek with beauty.
